Lemont’s Berta reaches career milestone at IHSA Wrestling Dual Team State Finals
|Lemont senior Egan Berta became just the second wrestler in school history to record 150 career wins when he won his match in the Indians' quarterfinal loss at the 2017 IHSA Wrestling Dual Team State Finals.
Making its fifth team state finals appearance, Lemont High School’s wrestling program dropped a 39-28 decision to Cahokia in a quarterfinal match at the 2017 IHSA Class 2A Wrestling Team State Finals on February 25 at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington. Senior Egan Berta
reached a career milestone in the match, becoming just the second wrestler in school history to reach the 150-win mark in his career.
Cahokia led early after wins by decision at 132 and 138 pounds. However, Berta (37-4) posted a 9-3 win at 145 pounds and senior Jake Kirkman
(42-5) won by major decision (12-0) at 152 pounds.
Cahokia took control of the match by scoring 33 straight points, which included three wins by fall, a forfeit, an injury forfeit, and a win by decision.
Freshman Drew Nash
(36-9) earned the team’s lone pin of the match at 120 pounds, and senior Jack Leffler
(29-12) closed his career with a 6-3 decision at 113 pounds. Freshmen Kyle Schickel
(43-6) and Grant LaDuke
(34-10) won by forfeit at 106 pounds and 126 pounds, respectively.
Lemont had previously advanced to the IHSA Dual Team State Finals in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2015. It earned a program-best third-place trophy in 2010, and was fourth in 2011.

Berta, who earned his second individual state medal a week earlier when he finished third at 145 pounds, finished his prep career in second place on the school’s all-time wins list behind Matt Leibforth ‘10
, who posted 157 wins from 2006-10. Berta and Leibforth are two of just three wrestlers in school history to earn two medals of third-place or better in their careers. Berta was the state runner-up at 145 pounds in 2016, while Leibforth was third at 135 pounds in 2009 and won the state championship at 135 pounds in 2010. Angel Cabral ‘10
won consecutive state titles at 285 pounds in 2009 and 2010.
Schickel - the IHSA Class 2A State Runner-Up at 106 pounds - closed his freshman season with 43 wins, which ties for third on the school’s single-season list. Leibforth won 45 matches in 2010, Derek Nagel ‘11
won 44 matches in 2011, and Berta had 43 wins in 2016.
Head coach John St. Clair’s
team advanced to team state finals competition by topping Brother Rice, 43-33, in one of two matches at the IHSA Class 2A Oak Forest Sectional on February 21.
Lemont won eight matches against Brother Rice, including five victories by fall. Berta (152), LaDuke (132), Nash (120), Schickel (106) and freshman Kyle Zator
(138) all pinned their opponents, while senior Damyen Gothard
(182) won by major decision. Kirkman (160) earned a victory by decision, and sophomore Paul McGrath
(113) won by forfeit.
Berta, Gothard, Kirkman, LaDuke, Leffler, Schickel and junior Alex Oruna
(182) all competed at the 2017 IHSA Class 2A Wrestling Individual State Finals from February 16-18. Berta and Kirkman each became the first wrestlers in school history to earn four individual state finals berths.
Lemont won the IHSA Lemont Regional on February 4 to earn its team sectional berth, and also advanced 10 wrestlers as individuals to the IHSA Thornridge Sectional.
