Four Lemont students win titles at 2017 FBLA State Leadership Conference

Lemont's FBLA chapter added four more state titles to its trophy case at the 2017 FBLA State Leadership Conference.

Lemont High School students placed among the top ten in 15 of 18 categories in which they were entered at the 2017 Future Business Leaders of America State Leadership Conference, which was held in Springfield, Ill., on March 24-25. The conference attracted more than 1,300 competitors from across the state, and featured competitions in more than 70 events. Lemont students combined to win four events, marking the fifth time in eight years that the school has brought home multiple titles.

Competitors who finish among the top three in their respective categories earn the right to participate in the 2017 FBLA National Leadership Conference, which will be held in Anaheim, Calif., this summer. Eight Lemont students have earned the chance to compete at the national level after combining for seven top-three finishes.

Lemont’s state champions included juniors Reece Graham (Insurance & Risk Management), Martynas Juskelis (Networking Concepts) and Alex Paulius (Securities & Investments), and sophomore Anna Mietus (Intro to Business Presentation). Juskelis and Paulius joined a select group of Lemont students who have won multiple FBLA state crowns; last year Juskelis and Paulius won the Cyber Security and Personal Finance categories, respectively. The other Lemont students to win multiple FBLA state titles are Spenser Bailey ‘16, Danny Banas ‘11 and Krystian Paszek ‘11.

Juniors Saher Rashid and Julie Stanwyck teamed for a runner-up finish in Social Media, sophomore Kirsten Kash finished second in Sales Presentation, and sophomore Elizabeth Piercy was third in Public Speaking II. Kash and Piercy each won state titles as freshmen in 2016.

Lemont’s FBLA chapter has won at least one state title in six of the last eight years, and has captured multiple titles five times (2010 - three; 2011 - five; 2015 - three; 2016 - five; 2017 - four).

Lemont’s other top-ten finishers included Juskelis and Paulius (5th - Local Chapter Annual Report); seniors Faraz Longi, John Pender and Jimmy Sliwa (Emerging Business Issues); junior Kendrick Tran (6th - Word Processing); seniors Chris Paulius and Joe Theodore (6th - Management Decision Making); juniors Easton Tally and Matt Zima (7th - Sports & Entertainment Marketing); seniors John Basiorka and Kevin Tuscher (9th - Business Plan); sophomores Matt Krueger and Gavin Pawell (10th - Business Financial Plan); and junior Sean Haughey (10th - Economics).

Additionally, Lemont’s chapter raised more than $2,000 for March of Dimes, the most of any chapter in the state.

Lemont advanced to the FBLA State Leadership Conference after a commanding performance - including 19 event wins and 28 top-three finishes - at the Central Northern Area Conference regional competition in January.

The FBLA is the largest business career student organization in the world, and includes 215,000 students worldwide in its high school division. Illinois’ chapter of the FBLA may be found on the Web at www.fbla.gen.il.us. Lemont’s FBLA chapter is sponsored by teacher John Aspel.
