Lemont High School to add boys’ lacrosse, girls’ badminton in 2017-18 school year

5/8/2017

The Lemont High School District 210 Board of Education recently approved a proposal from school administrators to add boys’ lacrosse and girls’ badminton for the 2017-18 school year. With the addition of these two programs in Spring 2018, Lemont High School will field 26 athletic teams – 13 for boys and 13 for girls.

The Lemont community has seen increasing support for youth lacrosse for more than a decade, and in April 2016, the Illinois High School Association approved a state series for both boys’ lacrosse and girls’ lacrosse to begin in Spring 2018. The Lemont Indians Youth Lacrosse organization offers opportunities for players up to age 15, while the Lacrosse Club of Lemont fields teams for high school students. Lemont Lacrosse has competed at the “varsity” level in the Illinois High School Lacrosse Association’s Class B since 2014, and set a club record with nine wins in 2016.

The school’s lacrosse teams will play on campus at the school’s football stadium. Currently, the Lemont Lacrosse Club uses the school’s stadium for its home games.

Badminton has proven to be very popular in the school’s physical education curriculum for several years. The IHSA has offered a state series in badminton since 1977, and this year, 94 schools will compete in the girls’ badminton state series.

When it adds girls’ badminton, Lemont High School will field teams in all 24 South Suburban Conference sports. Currently, Argo High School, Oak Forest High School, Oak Lawn High School, Shepard High School, T.F. North High School and T.F. South High School all compete in girls’ badminton in the SSC.

School administrators expect 40 students to participate in two levels of boys’ lacrosse, and 30 students to participate in two levels of girls’ badminton. The school has begun the process of hiring coaches for the two sports.
