Three Lemont student-athletes make college plans

Three Lemont High School student-athletes have solidified their plans to compete at the intercollegiate level next year. Egan Berta will wrestle at North Central College, while baseball players Joe Kelley and Nate Madej have committed to Robert Morris (Ill.) University and Florida SouthWestern State College, respectively.

Berta finished his career as one of the most accomplished wrestlers in school history. Kelley and Madej each played significant roles as Lemont won the 2016 IHSA Class 3A Baseball State Championship, and are key contributors again in 2017 as the Indians seek their third state title in four seasons.

Egan Berta - Career Highlights

  • Earned four varsity letters for head coach John St. Clair
  • Posted a career record of 150-31, becoming just the second wrestler in program history to reach 150 career wins
  • One of six Lemont wrestlers to earn multiple state medals, and one of just three to earn two medals of third place or better in their careers
  • Joined teammate Jake Kirkman as the first Lemont wrestlers to earn four individual state finals berths
  • Posted a combined 10-6 record in four state finals appearances
  • Earned three IHSA Regional and three IHSA Sectional titles
  • Two-time South Suburban Conference champion at 145 pounds
  • Posted a 37-4 record as a senior and finished third at 145 pounds at the 2017 IHSA Class 2A State Finals
  • Earned SSC, IHSA Regional and IHSA Sectional titles as a senior
  • Collected a 43-3 record as a junior and finished as the runner-up at 145 pounds at the 2016 IHSA Class 2A State Finals
  • His 43 wins rank fourth on the school’s single-season list
  • Won SSC, IHSA Regional and IHSA Sectional titles as a junior
  • Finished with a 41-11 record as a sophomore and reached the 2015 IHSA Class 2A State Finals at 138 pounds
  • Won his first IHSA Regional and IHSA Sectional titles as a sophomore
  • Went 29-13 as a freshman and qualified for the 2014 IHSA Class 2A State Finals at 126 pounds
  • Wrestled in the 2016 USA Wrestling Junior Nationals
  • Will wrestle for head coach Joe Norton at North Central, an NCAA Division III institution located in Naperville. Ill., and a member of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW). The Cardinals finished fourth in the CCIW in 2017.

Joe Kelley - Career Highlights

  • In the midst of his second varsity season playing outfield for head coach Brian Storako
  • Through games of May 15, is a .243 career hitter with seven doubles, 27 RBIs and 17 stolen bases in 60 games
  • Currently batting .254 with two doubles, 20 runs scored, 13 RBIs and 12 stolen bases as a senior
  • Is tied for third on the team in runs scored and ranks fourth in stolen bases
  • Batted .235 with five doubles, 21 runs scored,14 RBIs and a .388 on-base percentage in 36 games as a junior in 2016
  • Lemont finished with a 30-9 record, won the South Suburban Conference-Blue Division title, and captured the 2016 IHSA Class 3A State Championship
  • Had three hits combined in two games at the 2016 IHSA Class 3A State Finals
  • High honor roll student and two-time football letterman
  • Plays travel baseball for the Lemont Lightning
  • Will play for head coach Jason Becker at Robert Morris, an NAIA institution that is located in Chicago and is a member of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Eagles had posted five straight winning seasons prior to the 2017 campaign.

Nate Madej - Career Highlights

  • In the midst of his third varsity season playing for head coach Brian Storako
  • In 31 career appearances spanning 126.2 innings, has posted a 15-3 record with a 1.93 ERA and 182 strikeouts
  • Has struck out an average of 10.06 batters per seven innings in his career, posted a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 3.89:1, and a WHIP of 1.03
  • In 12 appearances thus far in 2017, has posted an 8-0 record with 72 strikeouts and 1.08 ERA in 51.2 innings
  • Leads the team in wins, innings pitched, strikeouts, ERA, WHIP (0.87) and strikeouts per seven innings (9.82)
  • Also batting .349 with one home run and 17 RBIs this season
  • Earned All-South Suburban Conference honors as a junior in 2016 after going 5-2 with a save in 13 appearances
  • Was second on the team in innings pitched (53.1) and strikeouts (76), third on the staff with five wins, and led the squad with 9.98 strikeouts per seven innings
  • Lemont finished with a 30-9 record, won the South Suburban Conference-Blue Division title, and captured the 2016 IHSA Class 3A State Championship
  • Made his varsity debut as a sophomore in 2015, as Lemont went 20-14 and won an IHSA Regional crown
  • Went 2-1 with a 3.23 ERA in six appearances, striking out 34 in 21.2 innings (11.16 strikeouts per seven innings)
  • Honor roll student
  • Plays travel baseball for the Cangelosi Sparks
  • Will play for head coach Jamie Corr at Florida SouthWestern College, a junior college that is located in Fort Myers, Fla., and is a member of the Suncoast Conference. The Buccaneers finished 23-31 in 2017.
