5/27/2017

In his state finals debut, sophomore David Lehenbeuer reached the final round of the high jump at the 2017 IHSA Class 3A State Finals.

Making his state finals debut, Lemont High School sophomore David Lehenbauer reached the final round of the high jump at the 2017 IHSA Class 3A Boys’ Track and Field State Finals, which were contested on May 26-27 at O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. He became just the second student-athlete in program history to advance to state finals competition in the high jump.

In the preliminary round, Lehenbauer cleared the 6’04.00” mark, which not only tied for the best effort of the day with 21 other competitors, but also established a new personal best. In the final round, he cleared the 6’03.00” mark to place 15th of 22 in the event.

Lehenbauer advanced to the state finals thanks to his third-place effort at the IHSA Lockport Sectional on May 18. He cleared the 6’03.00” mark, which was a personal best at the time as well as the IHSA’s qualifying mark in the event. The top two finishers in each of the state’s Class 3A Sectionals advance to the state finals, as do any athletes whose efforts in the preliminaries equal or surpass the designated qualifying marks.

Lemont’s boys’ track and field program, which is coached by Dennis Kennedy, has earned 16 state medals in its history. Nick Bromberek ‘00 won nine state medals in all. As the school’s only state finals competitor, Bromberek guided Lemont to a second-place finish at the 2000 IHSA Class AA State Finals. He won the 200- and 400-meter dash and long jump events, and was second in the 100-meter dash. Lemont’s most recent state medal came in 2016, when Chris Thompson ‘16 finished as the IHSA Class 3A State Runner-Up in the 400-meter dash.

The only other Lemont student-athlete to qualify for the state finals in the high jump was Scott McAdam ‘06, who did so in 2006.

Boys’ track and field is the eighth Lemont High School sport to be represented in IHSA State Finals competition this year. The cheerleading squad won the IHSA Medium Division State Championship; the girls’ cross country team was 14th at the Class 2A State Finals; the dance team was 14th at the Class 2A State Finals; the boys’ golf team was 11th at the Class 2A State Finals; Sylvia Kobylak competed at the IHSA Swimming State Finals; several members of the boys’ tennis program advanced to the IHSA Class A State Finals; the girls’ track and field’s 4 x 400 relay team advanced to the IHSA Class 3A State Finals; and the wrestling team advanced several individuals to the IHSA Class 2A State Finals and also advanced to the IHSA Class 2A Team State Finals.
