Lemont’s Alex Paulius again posts top-ten finish at FBLA National Conference

Lemont's Alex Paulius finished fourth in Securities and Investments at the 2017 FBLA National Leadership Conference, marking his second top ten finish in as many years.

For the second straight year, Lemont High School senior Alex Paulius posted a top ten finish at the Future Business Leaders of America National Leadership Conference, which was contested over the summer in Anaheim, Calif. Eight Lemont students competed across seven categories at the 2017 FBLA National Leadership Conference. Lemont’s FBLA chapter has seen students finish among the nation’s top ten three straight years.

Paulius placed fourth in the nation in the Securities and Investments category, and was the state’s top finisher in that competition. He joins Spenser Bailey ‘16 as the only Lemont students to record two top ten national finishes; he previously was seventh in Personal Finance at the 2016 FBLA National Conference.

Last spring, Paulius joined a select group of Lemont students who have won multiple FBLA state crowns. He finished first in Securities and Investments after winning the title in Personal Finance in 2016. Other Lemont students to win multiple FBLA state titles include Bailey, Danny Banas ‘11, senior Martynas Juskelis and Krystian Paszek ‘11.

Lemont’s national conference contingent also included Juskelis (Networking Concepts) and fellow seniors Reece Graham (Insurance & Risk Management) and Saher Rashid and Julie Stanwyck (Social Media); and juniors Kirsten Kash (Sales Presentation), Anna Mietus (Intro to Business Presentation) and Elizabeth Piercy (Public Speaking II).

Lemont’s national conference representatives advanced to the FBLA National Leadership Conference after placing among the top three in their respective categories at the 2017 FBLA State Leadership Conference. Lemont won multiple state titles for the fifth time in eight years. Graham, Juskelis and Mietus all joined Paulius as state champions in their respective categories last spring. Kash and the tandem of Rashid and Stanwyck posted runner-up finishes, while Piercy placed third.

Lemont’s top finisher at the FBLA National Leadership Conference was Olivia Matthews ‘16, who was the runner-up in the Public Speaking II category at the 2015 FBLA National Leadership Conference. In addition to Paulius, other Lemont students to place nationally have included Bailey (7th; Personal Finance - 2015; 4th; Securities & Investments - 2016), Paszek and Shawn Nienhouse ‘11 (8th; Management Information Systems - 2010) and Jessica Devitt ‘16 and Kennedy Pawell ‘16 (6th; Business Ethics - 2015).

Lemont students placed among the top ten in 15 categories at the 2017 FBLA State Leadership Conference, which was held in Springfield. Lemont’s FBLA chapter has won at least one state title in six of the last eight years, and has captured multiple titles five times (2010 - three; 2011 - five; 2015 - three; 2016 - five; 2017 - four).

The FBLA is the largest business career student organization in the world, and includes 215,000 students worldwide in its high school division. Illinois’ chapter of the FBLA may be found on the Web at www.fbla.gen.il.us. Lemont’s FBLA chapter is sponsored by teacher John Aspel.
