Lemont boys’ golf heads back to IHSA Class 2A State Finals

Lemont seniors Jack Kramer (left) and Raymond Sullivan each shot even-par 72s to tie for runner-up honors at the IHSA Lemont Sectional. Sullivan will become the program's first four-time state finalist.

Lemont High School’s boys’ golf program is headed back to state finals competition for the fourth straight season, and the ninth time in 11 years. Thanks in part to seniors Jack Kramer and Raymond Sullivan, who tied for second individually, head coach Mark Hollatz’s squad finished as the runner-up at the IHSA Lemont Sectional on October 9 to clinch its state finals berth, Lemont will participate in the 2017 IHSA Boys’ Golf Class 2A State Finals on Friday, October 13, and Saturday, October 14, at Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University in Normal. Sullivan will become the first golfer in school history to play in four IHSA State Finals events.

Kramer and Sullivan both shot even-par 72s at Broken Arrow Golf Club in Lockport. They trailed only medalist and defending IHSA Class 2A State Champion Luke Armbrust of Wheaton St. Francis, who shot a three-under 69. Senior Nate Stieber (+5 77) tied for ninth individually, while junior Chad Biggs (+8 80), senior Matt Grasman (+14 86) and sophomore Grant Sullivan also competed for the Indians.

Lemont’s team score of 301 provided a serious challenge to sectional champion Wheaton St. Francis (298). Joliet Catholic (321) won a tiebreaker over St. Rita to advance as a team to the state finals. The top three teams from each of the IHSA’s four Class 2A Sectionals advanced to state finals competition, along with the top 10 individuals from schools that did not qualify for state finals team competition.

Hollatz’s squad - which also captured the South Suburban Conference-Blue Division title for the 12th straight year this fall - finished as the IHSA Montini Catholic Regional runner-up at The Links at Carillon in Plainfield on October 3. The Indians tied with Wheaton St. Francis with a team of score of 304 and trailed only regional champion Nazareth Academy (300). Five players were among the top 20 individually, including Biggs (3rd; +1 73), Raymond Sullivan (t-4th; +2 74), Kramer (t-10th; +5 77), Stieber (t-14th; +8 80) and Grant Sullivan (t-16th; +9 81).

The IHSA Class 2A State Finals will tee off on October 13 and conclude on October 14. Weibring Golf Club is located at 800 W. Gregory Street in Normal, on the campus of Illinois State University. The course at Weibring Golf Club is a 6,507-yard par 71.

The IHSA moved to a three-class system for boys’ golf in 2007. In each season that Lemont has been classified as a 2A squad, it has advanced to state finals competition. The only seasons since 2007 that Lemont missed advancing to the state finals were 2012 and 2013, when the Indians were classified as a 3A team.

Lemont’s best team state finals finish came in 2011 when it earned a third-place trophy.
