Lemont’s Grace Horky equals program’s best finish at IHSA Girls’ Tennis State Finals

10/21/2017

Lemont's Grace Horky reached the fourth consolation round at the 2017 IHSA Class 1A Girls' Tennis State Finals, winning three of five matches.

Lemont High School junior Grace Horky won three of five matches at the 2017 IHSA Class 1A Girls’ Tennis State Finals, which were contested from October 19-21 and hosted by Districts 211, 214 and 220. Horky, who became just the second player in program history to earn multiple state finals berths, matched the program’s best state finals finish by reaching the fourth consolation round.

Horky (29-8) dropped her opening match in straight sets to Chicago Lake View’s Maria Rivas. However, she bounced back by winning three straight consolation round match-ups in straight sets, topping Althoff Catholic’s Jordyn Roper, Mt. Zion’s Paige Willer and Dunlap’s Taylor Disharoon. Horky’s second state final trip ended with a straight sets loss to Chicago Acero/Cruz’s Nicole Lao.

Prior to Horky’s effort, the only Lemont girls’ tennis player to advance as far in state finals play was Jessica Urban ‘10, who reached the fourth consolation round in 2007.

Horky advanced the state finals competition after finishing fourth at the IHSA Joliet Catholic Sectional on October 14. She punched her ticket to the state finals by winning her first two IHSA Sectional contests in straight sets, surrendering a total of two games in two matches. In the semifinal match, she was up a set but was forced to retire due to injury in the second set. Horky also defaulted due to injury in the third-place match.

In 2015, Horky became the first freshman in program history to qualify for the state finals.

Horky helped head coach Chris Hill’s team to its 12th straight South Suburban Conference-Blue Division title earlier this fall. She was the champion in the No. 1 singles flight for the third straight season.

Urban is the only other girls’ tennis player in school history to compete in multiple state finals events. She advanced to the season’s final weekend three straight years (2007-09).

Girls’ tennis is the school’s second athletic program to be represented in IHSA State Finals competition this year. The boys’ golf team placed ninth at the IHSA Class 2A Boys’ Golf State Finals.
