Lemont selected to participate in prestigious Chicago Symphony Center event

Lemont High School’s band program has been chosen to play in an event at one of Chicago’s most historic venues. Led by conductors Matt Doherty and Dave Nommensen, Lemont will be featured at the “Carthage in Chicago: Holiday Concert” which will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, December 4, at Orchestra Hall at Chicago Symphony Center.

Playing at a venue such as the Chicago Symphony Center is something that musicians of all ages dream of doing, and the hard work put in by Lemont’s band students has paid off with this potentially once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

Carthage College’s Music Department has a new tradition in that its music ensembles perform their programs from the acclaimed “Carthage Christmas Festival” at Chicago Symphony Center on the evening following their performances on their campus. Outstanding high school music programs are invited to join in the performance. Lemont was selected to participate in part because of its alumni taking part in the music program at Carthage.

Lemont’s selections at the event will include Robert Sheldon’s “A Longford Legend,” “Ukranian Bell Carol” arranged by Richard Saucedo, Eric Whitacre’s “The Seal Lullaby” and David Maslanka’s “Illumination.”

In addition to Lemont’s combined bands, the concert also will feature the Carthage Wind Orchestra, Carthage Philharmonic, Deerfield High School Wind Ensemble, and Evanston Township High School Wind Symphony.

General seating tickets are $20 each and may be purchased by visiting www.lemontband.org.

Built in 1904 and designed by renowned architect Daniel Burnham, Chicago Symphony Center is home to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Chorus and Civic Orchestra of Chicago. Orchestra Hall, which is located at the Chicago Symphony Center complex, seats more than 2,500. Chicago Symphony Center is located at 220 S. Michigan Avenue in Chicago,

Last spring, Lemont was one of just five schools in its class to participate at the 2017 University of Illinois SuperState Band Competition. That event was held at Follinger Great Hall in the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
