Lemont’s Owen Ganzer qualifies for IHSA Boys’ Swimming State Finals in two events

Lemont senior Owen Ganzer is just the second Lemont student to qualify for the boys' swimming state finals, and is the first in program history to win a sectional event, having done so in the 50 and 100 free.

Lemont High School senior swimmer Owen Ganzer has made school history, becoming just the second Lemont student-athlete to advance to boys’ swimming state finals competition. Ganzer won both the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle events at the IHSA Sandburg Sectional on February 17 to earn a trip to the 2018 IHSA Boys’ Swimming State Finals, which will be contested at Evanston Township High School on February 23-24. Ganzer is the first Lemont boys’ swimmer to qualify to compete in multiple state finals events in one season, and is the first Lemont swimmer to earn a state finals berth since 2007.

Ganzer became the first boys’ swimmer in school history to win an event in sectional competition, capturing the 50 free in 21.85 and breaking his own school record in the 100 free in 47.70. Lemont placed fifth in the team standings.

All swimmers who equal or surpass an established minimum qualifying time in sectional competition advance to the state finals, as do event winners at each of the state’s 16 sectionals.

Boys’ swimming became an official Lemont High School sport during the 2010-11 season. The only student to earn a state finals berth prior to Ganzer was Matt Krzeminski ‘08, who qualified for the IHSA State Finals in the 50 free in both 2006 and 2007. While the school did not offer a swim team at that time, Krzeminski was able to compete under the school’s name.

Ganzer helped head coach Mike Beranek’s team to a runner-up finish at the South Suburban Conference-Blue Division meet earlier this year. He set school records in the 50 free, 100 free (since broken) and 200 free at the event, and was also part of two school record relay squads (200 medley, 200 free). Ganzer was the SSC champion in the 50 free and 100 free.

Lemont’s best finish by an individual in boys’ swimming state finals competition came from Krzeminski, who was 44th in the 50 free at the 2006 IHSA State Finals.

Single-session tickets for the IHSA State Finals are $10; tickets may be purchased at the event. Swimming preliminaries will begin at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, February 23, while finals competition will start at noon on Saturday, February 24. Consolation finals will be swum immediately prior to the championship finals in each event.

Boys’ swimming is the eighth Lemont High School sport to be represented in IHSA State Finals competition this year. The cheerleading team won the IHSA Medium Division State Championship; the girls’ cross country team was 18th at the IHSA Class 2A Girls’ Cross Country State Finals; junior Andrew Deuschle competed at the IHSA Class 2A Boys’ Cross Country State Finals; the dance team was 19th at the IHSA Class 2A Competitive Dance State Finals; the boys’ golf team placed ninth at the IHSA Class 2A Boys’ Golf State Finals; junior Grace Horky competed in IHSA Class 1A Girls’ Tennis State Finals; and eight wrestlers qualified for the IHSA Class 2A Individual State Finals, including sophomores Grant LaDuke (6th), Drew Nash (5th) and Kyle Schickel (2nd) and freshman Apollo Gothard (5th), all of whom were medalists at the event.
