Lemont totals four medalist finishes at IHSA Wrestling State Finals

Lemont's four medalists at the 2018 IHSA State Finals included (clockwise, from top left) state runner-up Kyle Schickel, Apollo Gothard (5th place), Drew Nash (5th place) and Grant LaDuke (6th place).

Through just two seasons, Lemont High School sophomore Kyle Schickel already has his name scattered throughout the Lemont High School wrestling record book. Schickel finished as the state runner-up at 120 pounds at the 2018 IHSA Class 2A Wrestling Individual State Finals, which were contested at the State Farm Center on the campus of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign from February 15-17. Schickel – who was one of four Lemont wrestlers to medal at the event – is just the second wrestler in program history to twice place among the top two in the state, as well as the school’s youngest two-time medalist.

Sophomores Grant LaDuke (6th, 132 pounds) and Drew Nash (5th, 126 pounds) and freshman Apollo Gothard (5th, 195 pounds) also earned their first state medals at the event.

Schickel (40-5) posted three wins by decision to reach the state title match, which he dropped to Brother Rice’s Hassan Johnson by a 4-2 decision in overtime. A state runner-up at 106 pounds as a freshman in 2017, Schickel finished as the sectional runner-up at 120 pounds. He posted a third-place finish in regional competition and not only won the conference title in his weight class, but also was named the South Suburban Conference’s Most Valuable Wrestler. He won SSC, IHSA Regional and IHSA Sectional titles in 2017 when he also became the program’s youngest state medalist.

Prior to Schickel, the only wrestler in school history to twice finish among the state’s top two was Angel Cabral ‘10, who won consecutive 285-pound state titles in 2009 and 2010.

Nash (43-6) won four of six matches in his state finals debut, and capped his appearance by posting a win by major decision (15-1) in the fifth place match. Nash’s 43 wins this season tie for third on the school’s single-season list. He captured his first sectional title, his second straight IHSA Regional crown, and his first SSC title earlier this season.

Gothard (38-8) also captured four of six contests in his first state finals appearance, and won by major decision (10-2) in the fifth place match. He won four matches to capture a sectional title, and was a regional runner-up.

LaDuke (29-10) won two of five state finals matches while making his second straight state finals appearance. He was the sectional runner-up and won his second straight IHSA Regional title. He captured SSC and IHSA Sectional titles and dropped two matches in his state finals debut in 2017.

Senior Alex Oruna (29-8) made his second straight state finals appearance and won one of three matches for the second straight season. He earned his second straight regional and sectional titles at 182 pounds, and finished as the SSC runner-up in his weight class earlier this season.

Sophomore Kyle Zator (38-14) won one of three matches at 138 pounds in his state finals debut. He finished third in his weight class in regional and sectional competition, as well as at the SSC Meet.

Senior Ryan Dickson (28-9) dropped his lone match at 152 pounds while making his first state finals appearance. He was third in both regional and sectional competition, and won his weight class at the SSC Meet.

Junior Paul McGrath (20-6) fell short at 113 pounds in his first state finals match. He won his first IHSA Regional title and placed third in sectional competition.

Head coach John St. Clair’s team finished as the runner-up both in the SSC Blue and at its own IHSA Regional this season. The team’s four medalists in 2018 is the second-most in one season in program history; Lemont had seven medalists at the 2012 IHSA State Finals.
