3/8/2018

Lemont students brought home three medals from IDEA Regional competition. Jake Wilk (top left) repeated as a regional winner, Zach Counsil (top right) was a runner-up, and (bottom) Kendrick Tran, Aaron Bromberek and Alex Fugiel earned a first-place medal.

Lemont High School’s Technology Student Association has advanced students in three events to the state’s top drafting contest. At the Illinois Design Educators Association (IDEA) Regional at Joliet Junior College on March 2, seniors Zach Counsil and Jake Wilk each earned individual medals, while seniors Aaron Bromberek and Kendrick Tran and junior Alex Fugiel teamed for a medal of their own. All will compete at the IDEA State Competition at Illinois State University on Saturday, April 14. At least one Lemont student has advanced to state competition in 10 of the last 11 years.

Wilk became the first Lemont student to win multiple IDEA Regional titles, as he repeated as the champion in the Architectural Board division. In that category, students are challenged to design and/or draw specified views, details or sections using provided materials, specifications and drawings.

Counsil was the runner-up in 3D Architectural CAD Modeling. In that category, competitors model small objects within a designated time period, calculating volume and distance checks of the objects modeled.

For the first time, the IDEA Regional at Joliet Junior College featured two team divisions – Engineering Design and Architectural Design. Bromberek, Fugiel and Tran captured the Engineering Design category. in which a student “firm” of two or three students complete a presentation and project solution to sell their firm’s design to a client.

Students representing a number of Joliet-area high schools competed in ten divisions at the IDEA Joliet Junior College Regional, one of many regional sites across the state. All first- and second-place finishers earn the right to compete at the IDEA State Competition. The divisions in which students compete are: Architectural Design, Engineering Design, Introductory Board, Introductory CAD, Architectural Board, 2D Architectural CAD, 2D Machine CAD, 3D Architectural CAD Modeling, 3D Assembly Modeling, and 3D CAD Modeling.

Lemont’s drafting program, under the tutelage of teacher Scott Duensing, has had a great deal of success in recent years at the IDEA Regional level. The school has boasted a number of regional champions, including Ryan Strauss ‘08 (3D Architectural CAD Modeling) in 2008; Nick Lawrence ‘09 (3D Architectural CAD Modeling) in 2009; Mark Kaminski ‘10 (Architectural Board) and Kathy Sitko ‘10 (Introductory Board) in 2010; Szymon Krzeptowski-Mucha ‘13 (Architectural Board) in 2012; Tom Janik ‘14 (Assembly Modeling) and Katie Lynch ‘14 (Architectural Board) in 2014; Jasmine Hornik ‘15 (Architectural Board) in 2015; Matt Lassak ‘16 (Architectural Board) in 2016; and Wilk (Architectural Board) in 2017.

Lemont’s top finisher at the IDEA State Competition was Sean Armbruster ‘09, who was the runner-up in 3D Architectural CAD Modeling category in 2009. Lemont’s other medalists have included Hornik (3rd, Architectural Board), Lassak (3rd, Architectural Board) and Adam Popper ‘17 (3rd, Introductory CAD) in 2015, and Lassak (3rd, Architectural Board) and Dan Garczek ‘16 (3rd, 3D Architectural CAD Modeling) in 2016.
