Five Lemont student-athletes make college commitments

Five Lemont High School seniors have made commitments to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. Righthanded pitcher/third baseman Gia Cantarino has committed to play softball at Elmhurst College; Beata Drozda will participate in women’s cross country and track and field at Elmhurst College; golfer Jack Kramer will continue his career at Coastal Alabama Community College; Jacey Schickel will participate in women’s cross country and track and field at Saint Xavier University; and linebacker Caleb Young will be a preferred walk-on at Iowa State University.

Gia Cantarino - Career Highlights

  • In her second varsity season for head coach Chris Traina
  • Has helped Lemont to an early 4-0 start in 2018
  • Is tied for the team lead with two wins
  • Has yet to allow a run in 9.0 innings of work, covering three appearances
  • Has struck out seven batters and allowed just six baserunners
  • Made her varsity debut as a junior in 2017, batting .308 with 11 runs batted in
  • Totaled four doubles and scored nine runs, and posted a slugging percentage of .385
  • In the circle, posted a 3-0 record with a 2.95 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP in six appearances
  • Averaged 10.32 strikeouts per seven innings, fanning 28 in 19.0 innings
  • Plays travel softball for the Burr Ridge Blast
  • Member of the school’s Link Crew
  • Will play for head coach Mike Paulo at Elmhurst College, an NCAA Division III institution that is located in Elmhurst, Ill., and is a member of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin. The Bluejays have finished at or above .500 in four of Paulo’s first five seasons.

Beata Drozda - Career Highlights

  • Four-year member of both the girls’ cross country and girls’ track and field teams for head coach Tim Plotke
  • Has earned eight all-conference awards between cross country and track and field
  • Helped Lemont to four straight South Suburban Conference-Blue Division titles in cross country, as well as two SSC Blue titles in track and field
  • Lemont won four IHSA Regional titles and two IHSA Sectional crowns and advanced to the IHSA Class 2A Girls’ Cross Country State Finals four times during her career
  • One of only two student-athletes in program history to compete in four IHSA State Finals events in cross country
  • Earned All-SSC honors as a senior in 2017 by placing fifth at the SSC Meet and was Lemont’s top finisher in IHSA Sectional competition
  • Finished second among Lemont runners and 87th overall with a time of 19:05 as her team finished 18th at the 2017 IHSA Class 2A State Finals
  • Won the individual SSC title as a junior in 2016 and was the team’s top finisher in IHSA Sectional competition
  • Was the team’s top runner and placed 49th individually with a career-best 3-mile time of 18:21 as Lemont finished 14th at the 2016 IHSA Class 2A State Finals
  • Earned her first cross country All-SSC honors by finishing among the top ten at the SSC Meet as a sophomore in 2015
  • Crossed the line in 19:18 to place 126th individually as Lemont finished eighth in the team standings at the 2015 IHSA Class 2A State Finals
  • Cracked the line-up as a freshman in 2014 and placed ninth in IHSA Sectional competition
  • Placed 65th individually with a time of 18:37 at the 2014 IHSA Class 2A State Finals as Lemont posted a program-best fourth-place finish in the team standings
  • Earned at least one All-SSC honor in each of her first three track and field seasons
  • Helped Lemont to the 2017 SSC Blue title as a junior as she earned all-conference accolades in the 800 meter and 1600 meter runs, and was part of the 4 x 800 meter relay that finished first
  • Was a member of the conference champion 4 x 800 meter relay squad as a sophomore in 2016
  • Was a member of the conference champion 4 x 800 meter relay squad as a freshman in 2015 as Lemont won the SSC Blue
  • High honor roll student and National Honor Society inductee
  • Will run for head coach Jordan Bartolazzi at Elmhurst College, an NCAA Division III institution that is located in Elmhurst, Ill., and is a member of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin. Bartolazzi is in his first year heading the Bluejays’ women’s cross country and track and field programs.

Jack Kramer - Career Highlights

  • Earned three varsity letters playing for head coach Mark Hollatz
  • Three-time all-conference performer who played in three IHSA Class 2A State Finals and helped his team to three South Suburban Conference-Blue Division titles
  • Posted a 38.1 scoring average as a senior in 2017, which is the program’s sixth-best single-season scoring average since 1994
  • Finished as the SSC Blue runner-up and helped the team to the SSC Blue crown
  • Posted a career-best 18-hole score of even-par 72 while finishing second individually in IHSA Sectional competition
  • Tied for 21st with a +8 150 at the 2017 IHSA Class 2A State Finals, which marked his best state finals performance
  • Averaged 41.2 as a junior in 2016
  • Earned All-SSC accolades by placing sixth and helped the team to the SSC Blue crown
  • Placed second individually in IHSA Regional competition with a +8 80
  • Tied for 84th with a +30 172 at the 2016 IHSA Class 2A State Finals
  • Made his varsity debut by averaging 43.1 as a sophomore in 2015
  • Earned All-SSC accolades by placing sixth and helped the team to the SSC Blue crown
  • Tied for 101st with a +38 180 while making his first state finals appearance at the 2015 IHSA Class 2A State Finals
  • Also served as a starter on the boys’ basketball team as a senior, helping the squad to a 19-9 record and a runner-up finish in the SSC Blue Division

  • Will play for head coach Mikki Bjuro at Coastal Alabama Community College, a junior college that is located in Bay Minette, Ala., and is a member of the Alabama Community College Conference. The Sun Chiefs earned an ACCC Championship last year and advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Men’s Golf Championship.

Jacey Schickel - Career Highlights

  • Four-year member of both the girls’ cross country and girls’ track and field teams for head coach Tim Plotke
  • Has earned six all-conference awards between cross country and track and field
  • Helped Lemont to four straight South Suburban Conference-Blue Division titles in cross country, as well as two SSC Blue titles in track and field
  • Lemont won four IHSA Regional titles and two IHSA Sectional crowns and advanced to the IHSA Class 2A Girls’ Cross Country State Finals four times during her career
  • Earned All-SSC honors as a senior in 2017 by placing fourth at the SSC Meet and was Lemont’s top finisher in IHSA Regional competition
  • Finished first among Lemont runners and 86th overall with a career-best 3-mile time of 19:05 as her team finished 18th at the 2017 IHSA Class 2A State Finals
  • Placed fourth at the SSC meet as a junior in 2016
  • Placed 83rd individually with a time of 19:18 as Lemont finished 14th at the 2016 IHSA Class 2A State Finals
  • Crossed the line in 19:09 to place 116th individually as Lemont finished eighth in the team standings at the 2015 IHSA Class 2A State Finals
  • Helped Lemont to the 2017 SSC Blue title in track and field as a junior as she placed first in both the 1600 meter and 3200 meter runs
  • Was a member of the conference champion 4 x 800 meter relay squad and earned all-conference honors in the 1600 meter run as a freshman in 2015 as Lemont won the SSC Blue

  • Will run for head coach Lisa Ebel at Saint Xavier University, an NAIA institution that is located in Chicago and is a member of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Cougars finished fifth at the CCAC cross country meet last fall and featured an All-America runner.

Caleb Young - Career Highlights

  • Three-year varsity starter for head coach Bret Kooi
  • Totaled 212 tackles (129 solo), 34 tackles-for-loss, 11 sacks, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and three interceptions during his career, twice earning all-conference honors
  • Helped the Indians to a 30-5 record, three South Suburban Conference-Blue Division titles, and two IHSA Quarterfinal appearances
  • Was an honorable mention Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Class 5A selection as a senior in 2017, while also earning All-SSC and all-area honors from the Daily Southtown and Joliet Herald News
  • Posted a career high and was third on the team with 91 tackles (55 solo), was third on the team with a career-best 15 tackles-for-loss, and led the team with eight sacks
  • Added two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown
  • Helped the defense allow just 7.8 points per game and post five shutouts
  • Lemont went 10-2, posted a perfect 6-0 record in SSC Blue play, and reached the IHSA Class 5A Quarterfinals
  • Cited as an All-SSC performer as a junior in 2016
  • Was second on the team with 79 tackles (49 solo), including 13 tackles-for-loss
  • Broke up four passes and added a sack and a fumble recovery
  • The Indians went 11-1, posting a perfect 9-0 record during the regular season, and won the SSC Blue title before appearing in the IHSA Class 6A Quarterfinals
  • Earned his first varsity playing time as a sophomore in 2015
  • Totaled 42 tackles (25 solo), which included six tackles-for-loss, and added two sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception
  • Lemont went 9-2, posted a perfect 6-0 record in SSC Blue play, and advanced to the second round of the IHSA Class 6A Playoffs
  • Also a member of the school’s baseball program
  • High honor roll student and National Honor Society inductee
  • Will play for head coach Matt Campbell at Iowa State University, an NCAA Football Bowl Championship Series institution that is located in Ames, Iowa, and is a member of the Big 12 Conference. The Cyclones went 8-5 last season and won the Liberty Bowl, while Campbell was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year.
