Lemont tops Peoria Notre Dame, 3-1, to earn sixth girls’ soccer state finals berth

Head coach Rick Prangen's program will be making its sixth state finals appearance in ten seasons.

Lemont High School’s girls’ soccer program is no stranger to state finals competition, having made five appearances prior to this season. However, for the first time in school history, head coach Rick Prangen’s squad has advanced to the state’s final weekend in back-to-back seasons. Lemont topped host Peoria Notre Dame, 3-1, in an IHSA Super-Sectional contest on May 29 to clinch its sixth state finals berth in ten seasons.

The Indians (24-1), who set a school season record for victories with their triumph, will face Wheaton St. Francis on Friday, June 1, at 11 a.m. in the 2018 IHSA Class 2A State Finals at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium on the campus of North Central College. Normal West and St. Viator will meet in the second state semifinal. The IHSA Class 2A Girls’ Soccer State Championship is slated for approximately 1 p.m. on June 2, while the third-place game will be played at 11 a.m.

Lemont did all of its damage by taking advantage of corner kick opportunities, with two of those scores coming within the first two minutes of the first and second halves. Just short of two minutes into the game, junior Katie Knutte headed in a corner kick from senior Mairead Ruane for her 17th goal of the season. Peoria Notre Dame knotted the game ten minutes later.

Lemont took the lead for good just 90 seconds into the second half when Ruane’s corner kick resulted in a Peoria Notre Dame own goal. The Indians added an insurance goal with less than seven minutes remaining when senior Jacqueline Aleman’s corner found sophomore Erin Crispo for her 22nd goal of the season.

Senior Michelle Jerantowski made two saves for Lemont.

Lemont will be seeking its first girls’ soccer state championship. The Indians posted a runner-up finish in their first state finals appearance in 2009, finished third in 2011, and placed fourth in 2013, 2015 and 2017.

Lemont has outscored its foes by a 126-11 margin this season, including a 33-3 advantage in postseason play.

Ruane has totaled team highs of 23 goals, 20 assists and 66 points, while Crispo has added 22 goals and freshman Victoria Silvar has scored 18 goals. Aleman has posted nine goals and 19 assists. Jerantowski has posted an 18-1 record and posted 12 shutouts.

Girls’ soccer is the ninth Lemont High School sport to be represented in IHSA State Finals competition this year. The cheerleading team won the IHSA Medium Division State Championship; the girls’ cross country team was 18th at the IHSA Class 2A Girls’ Cross Country State Finals; Andrew Deuschle competed at the IHSA Class 2A Boys’ Cross Country State Finals; the dance team was 19th at the IHSA Class 2A Competitive Dance State Finals; the boys’ golf team placed ninth at the IHSA Class 2A Boys’ Golf State Finals; Grace Horky competed in IHSA Class 1A Girls’ Tennis State Finals; David Lehenbauer participated at the IHSA Class 3A Boys’ Track and Field State Finals; and Kyle Schickel (2nd), Apollo Gothard (5th), Drew Nash (5th) and Grant LaDuke (6th) all medaled at the IHSA Class 2A Wrestling Individual State Finals, while Ryan Dickson, Paul McGrath, Alex Oruna and Kyle Zator all participated in the event as well.
