Lemont’s David Lehenbauer posts best IHSA State Finals finish in high jump

5/26/2018

Lemont junior David Lehenbauer placed 10th in the high jump at the 2018 IHSA State Finals.

Making his second straight state finals appearance, Lemont High School junior David Lehenbauer posted his best state finals finish to date in the high jump at the 2018 IHSA Class 3A Boys’ Track and Field State Finals, which were contested on May 25-26 at O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. Lehenbauer placed 10th of 44 competitors in the event.

On the first day of competition, Lehenbauer was one of 22 competitors to clear the 6’03.00” mark and advance to the final round. In the championship round, he cleared 6’05.00” to earn a 10th-place finish.

Lehenbauer also reached the final round in his first state finals appearance in 2017 before ultimately placing 15th. He established a new school record in the high jump earlier this season when he cleared the 6’06.00” mark.

Lehenbauer finished as the runner-up in the high jump at the IHSA Downers Grove North Sectional on May 18 to earn a state finals berth. He cleared the 6’00.00” mark, which not only was good for second place at the sectional, but also is the IHSA’s qualifying height in the event.

The top two finishers in each of the state’s Class 3A Sectionals advance to the state finals, as do any athletes whose efforts in the preliminaries equal or surpass the designated qualifying marks.

Lemont’s boys’ track and field program, which is coached by Dennis Kennedy, has earned 16 state medals in its history. Nick Bromberek ‘00 won nine state medals in all. As the school’s only state finals competitor, Bromberek guided Lemont to a second-place finish at the 2000 IHSA Class AA State Finals. He won the 200- and 400-meter dash and long jump events, and was second in the 100-meter dash. Lemont’s most recent state medal came in 2016, when Chris Thompson ‘16 finished as the IHSA Class 3A State Runner-Up in the 400-meter dash.

The only other Lemont student-athlete to qualify for the state finals in the high jump was Scott McAdam ‘06, who did so in 2006.

Boys’ track and field is the eighth Lemont High School sport to be represented in IHSA State Finals competition this year. The cheerleading team won the IHSA Medium Division State Championship; the girls’ cross country team was 18th at the IHSA Class 2A Girls’ Cross Country State Finals; Andrew Deuschle competed at the IHSA Class 2A Boys’ Cross Country State Finals; the dance team was 19th at the IHSA Class 2A Competitive Dance State Finals; the boys’ golf team placed ninth at the IHSA Class 2A Boys’ Golf State Finals; Grace Horky competed in IHSA Class 1A Girls’ Tennis State Finals; and Kyle Schickel (2nd), Apollo Gothard (5th), Drew Nash (5th) and Grant LaDuke (6th) all medaled at the IHSA Class 2A Wrestling Individual State Finals, while Ryan Dickson, Paul McGrath, Alex Oruna and Kyle Zator all participated in the event as well.
