Lemont places third at 2018 IHSA Class 2A Girls’ Soccer State Finals


Lemont topped Normal West in a shootout to earn third place at the 2018 IHSA Class 2A State Finals, marking the team's best finish since 2011.

Making its third state finals appearance in four seasons and its sixth state finals trip overall, Lemont High School’s girls’ soccer team finished third at the 2018 IHSA Class 2A State Finals,which were contested on June 1-2 at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium on the campus of North Central College. The Indians topped Normal West in penalty kicks in the third place match to secure the program’s best state finals finish since 2011.

In the third-place match, Lemont and Normal West battled to a scoreless tie through regulation before moving to a shootout. Senior Mairead Ruane, junior Katie Knutte, senior Jacqueline Aleman and sophomore Danielle Irwin all converted their penalty kick attempts. After not being forced to make a save during regulation, senior Michelle Jerantowski clinched the match by blocking Normal West’s final attempt in the shootout.

In the semifinal match, Lemont fell by a 2-0 score to eventual state champion Wheaton St. Francis. Jerantowski had five saves in the match.

After reaching the state finals in alternating years each season since 2009, head coach Rick Prangen’s team advanced to the final weekend for the first time in consecutive seasons when it topped host Peoria Notre Dame, 3-1, in an IHSA Super-Sectional contest on May 29.

Lemont finished the season with a 25-2 record, establishing a new single-season record for victories. The squad outscored its foes by a 126-13 margin while reaching the 20-win mark for the eighth time in program history. Ruane led the team with 23 goals, 20 assists and 66 points, while sophomore Erin Crispo added 22 goals. Aleman was second on the squad with 19 assists, and Jerantowski allowed only 12 goals in 21 contests and posted a 19-2 record in goal.

The Indians posted a runner-up finish in their first state finals appearance in 2009, finished third in 2011, and placed fourth in 2013, 2015 and 2017.

Girls’ soccer is the ninth Lemont High School sport to be represented in IHSA State Finals competition this year. The cheerleading team won the IHSA Medium Division State Championship; the girls’ cross country team was 18th at the IHSA Class 2A Girls’ Cross Country State Finals; Andrew Deuschle competed at the IHSA Class 2A Boys’ Cross Country State Finals; the dance team was 19th at the IHSA Class 2A Competitive Dance State Finals; the boys’ golf team placed ninth at the IHSA Class 2A Boys’ Golf State Finals; Grace Horky competed in IHSA Class 1A Girls’ Tennis State Finals; David Lehenbauer participated at the IHSA Class 3A Boys’ Track and Field State Finals; and Kyle Schickel (2nd), Apollo Gothard (5th), Drew Nash (5th) and Grant LaDuke (6th) all medaled at the IHSA Class 2A Wrestling Individual State Finals, while Ryan Dickson, Paul McGrath, Alex Oruna and Kyle Zator all participated in the event as well.
