Lemont’s boys’, girls’ cross country again to be represented at IHSA State Finals

10/31/2018

Lemont senior Andrew Deuschle (left) will be making his second straight cross country state finals appearance, while freshman Kaylie Politza paced the girls' squad to its fifth straight team state finals berth.

For the second straight season, both of Lemont High School’s cross country teams will participate in state finals competition. The girls’ squad placed fourth in sectional competition on October 27 to secure its fifth consecutive state finals berth, while senior Andrew Deuschle moved on to boys’ state finals competition as an individual for the second time in as many years. Lemont will compete at the 2018 IHSA Class 2A State Finals, which will be contested on Saturday, November 3, at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

The top five teams from each of the IHSA’s five Class 2A Sectionals advance to state finals competition, along with the top seven individuals at each sectional from schools that did not qualify for state finals team competition.

At the IHSA Kaneland Sectional, which was held at Kaneland High School, freshman Kaylie Politza paced the girls’ team, placing third with a time of 18:31. Junior Marin Schiffman (24th; 19:40), senior Daina Maleiska (27th; 19:53), sophomore Jenny Martinez (38th; 20:21) and freshman Destiny Vargas (40th; 20:30) rounded out the team’s top five.

Lemont was the runner-up at the IHSA Hinsdale South Regional, which was held at Katherine Legge Park in Hinsdale on October 20. Politza (2nd; 19:37) and Maleiska (9th; 20:41) each earned all-regional accolades.

Lemont will be making its 11th team state finals appearance in girls’ cross country. After making its initial appearance in 1991, it advanced to state finals competition five straight years from 2007-2011, and again each year from 2014-17. Its best team state finals finish was a fourth-place showing in 2014. Lemont has won seven regional crowns (1991, 2007, 2008, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017) and three sectional titles (2008, 2014, 2016).

Taylor Campos ‘16
is Lemont’s top state finals finisher ever on a 3-mile course; she earned all-state honors by crossing the line 23rd overall in a school-record time of 17:56 in 2014. Nikole Hoster ‘98 placed 12th on a 2-mile course at the 1996 IHSA Class AA State Finals to mark the program’s best individual state finals finish.

Deuschle – who, in 2017, became Lemont’s first state finals qualifier in boys’ cross country since 2012 – placed 10th individually at the IHSA Kaneland Sectional, covering the 3-mile course in 16:03. Lemont was sixth in the team standings.

Lemont’s boys’ cross country team placed fourth at the IHSA Hinsdale South Regional. Deuschle was the Indians’ top finisher, placing seventh and earning all-regional honors with a time of 17:08.

Andrew Adelmann ‘02 is Lemont’s top state finals finisher in boys’ cross country, having placed 37th at the 2001 IHSA Class AA State Finals.

Head coach Tim Plotke’s program secured both the South Suburban Conference-Blue Division boys’ and girls’ cross country titles for the second time this fall; Lemont first did so in 2012. The girls’ team swept the top six spots at the SSC Blue Meet, while Deuschle placed third in the boys’ meet.

The IHSA will host both boys’ and girls’ state finals competition in three classes at Detweiller Park on November 3. The girls’ Class 2A race begins at 11 a.m., while the boys’ race starts at noon. The Class 2A awards ceremony is set for 1 p.m.

Boys’ and girls’ cross country are the fourth and fifth Lemont High School sports to be represented in IHSA State Finals competition this year. Freshman Paulius Malcius competed at the 2018 IHSA Class 2A Boys’ Golf State Finals; senior Maggie Micetich participated at the 2018 IHSA Class AA Girls’ Golf State Finals; and seniors Grace Horky and Maggie O’Brien and freshman Amanda Lopykinski all advanced to the 2018 IHSA Class 1A Girls’ Tennis State Finals.
