“National STEM Day” event, CITGO Innovation Academy dedication set for Nov. 8

Lemont High School will host a “National STEM Day” celebration on campus from 6-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 8, in the CITGO Innovation Academy at Lemont High School. Though it has been serving students, faculty and staff since the start of the school year, the Innovation Academy officially will be dedicated prior to the “National STEM Day” event in a ceremony that will include local government officials, representatives from CITGO, and other guests.

The “National STEM Day” event will feature a program from 6:30-7 p.m. and STEM activities and live demonstrations from 7-8:30 p.m. The event is free and intended for students of all ages.

Directions to Lemont High School

A partnership between Lemont High School, CITGO and the Lemont High School Educational Foundation (LHSEF) helped transform the school’s library into the CITGO Innovation Academy, which not only will serve as a daily resource for the school’s 1,400-plus students, but also host events such as “National STEM Day.”

The space not only features new paint and flooring, but also includes modular seating that can be rearranged for groups of all sizes, collaboration rooms, a classroom setting that can serve as many as 100 students, and a state-of-the-art STEM classroom with new equipment, supplies and training resources. The CITGO Innovation Academy at Lemont High School also soon will include a coffee bar that will be staffed by some of the school’s special education students.

With representatives on hand from both CITGO’s corporate headquarters and the CITGO Lemont Refinery, the Lemont High School District 210 Board of Education approved the launch of the CITGO Innovation Academy at Lemont High School at its meeting on August 20, 2018. It is the first Innovation Academy established in Illinois, and just the second at the high school level across the country.

The first CITGO Innovation Academy was launched in 2013 at Foy H. Moody High School in Corpus Christi, Texas, which serves as the flagship campus. Since then, Innovation Academies also have been implemented at Cunningham Middle School and Garcia Elementary School, both in Corpus Christi; West Oso Independent School District in Corpus Christi; E.K. Key Elementary School in Sulphur, La.; Olle Middle School in Houston, Texas; and Lemont High School.

Programming at the CITGO Innovation Academy at Lemont High School will encourage students to explore career paths in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). By inspiring and nurturing creative, ethical and scientific minds that advance the world through questioning, collaboration, personalized learning and use of technology and outreach, participants will be well-prepared for STEM college or technical programs.

CITGO Innovation Academies are the cornerstone of the CITGO STEM Talent Pipeline. Through the CITGO STEM Talent Pipeline, the company actively supports the academic exploration of STEM education in the schools near its refineries in Corpus Christi, Texas; Lake Charles, La.; Lemont, Ill.; and its headquarters in Houston, Texas. Since the initiative’s inception, CITGO has awarded more than $1.5 million toward programs that promote the importance of STEM education and provide educators with needed resources.

Thanks to the success of its “Taste of Lemont” events and support made possible through its fundraising efforts, the LHSEF was able to commit to contributing $120,000 to help make the CITGO Innovation Academy at Lemont High School a reality. The LHSEF has contributed nearly $530,000 to benefit Lemont High School students since 2007.
