Lemont High School freshman Kaylie Politza made her cross country state finals debut one to remember. Politza matched the best placement in program history by posting a 12th-place finish at the 2018 IHSA Class 2A Girls’ Cross Country State Finals, which were contested at Detweiller Park in Peoria on November 3. Lemont finished 18th in the team standings. Senior Andrew Deuschle placed 77th in the boys’ race, which marks his best state finals effort.

Politza not only earned all-state accolades with her 12th-place finish, but she crossed the line in 17:41, establishing a new school record time on a 3-mile course. Her placement matches Nikole Hoster ‘98, who placed 12th on a 2-mile course at the 1996 IHSA Class AA State Finals. Lemont’s previous best individual state finals effort on a 3-mile course came from Taylor Campos ‘16, who was 23rd in a then-school record time of 17:56 at the 2014 IHSA Class 2A State Finals. Politza joins Campos, Hoster and Lisa Smiley ‘93 (25th, 1990 Class A State Finals) as Lemont’s all-state performers.

The rest of Lemont’s state finals contingent included junior Marin Schiffman (101st; 19:19), senior Julianne McClatchy (104th; 19:22), senior Daina Maleiska (112th; 19:26), freshman Destiny Vargas (138th; 19:39), sophomore Jenny Martinez (139th; 19:39) and sophomore Kailey Wasyliw (194th; 20:58).

Lemont was making its 11th team state finals appearance in girls’ cross country. After making its initial appearance in 1991, it advanced to state finals competition five straight years from 2007-2011, and again each year from 2014-17. Its best team state finals finish was a fourth-place showing in 2014. Lemont has won seven regional crowns (1991, 2007, 2008, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017) and three sectional titles (2008, 2014, 2016).

Lemont advanced to the state finals by placing fourth at the IHSA Kaneland Sectional. Politza paced the team, placing third with a time of 18:31. Schiffman (24th; 19:40), Maleiska (27th; 19:53), Martinez (38th; 20:21) and Vargas (40th; 20:30) rounded out the team’s top five. Lemont was the runner-up at the IHSA Hinsdale South Regional. Politza (2nd; 19:37) and Maleiska (9th; 20:41) each placed among the top ten.

Deuschle crossed the line in 15:56, which was good for 77th individually. That marked a significant improvement from his debut state finals performance in 2017, when he was Lemont’s first state finals qualifier in boys’ cross country since 2012 and placed 160th in a time of 16:46.

Deuschle placed 10th individually at the IHSA Kaneland Sectional, covering the 3-mile course in 16:03. Lemont was sixth in the team standings. The team placed fourth at the IHSA Hinsdale South Regional, with Deuschle placing seventh with a time of 17:08.

Andrew Adelmann ‘02 is Lemont’s top state finals finisher in boys’ cross country, having placed 37th at the 2001 IHSA Class AA State Finals.

Head coach Tim Plotke’s program secured both the South Suburban Conference-Blue Division boys’ and girls’ cross country titles this fall; this is the second time that both teams have won SSC Blue crowns in the same season, having first done so in 2012. Politza placed first as the girls’ team swept the top six spots at the SSC Blue Meet, while Deuschle placed third in the boys’ meet.

Boys’ and girls’ cross country are the fourth and fifth Lemont High School sports to be represented in IHSA State Finals competition this year. Freshman Paulius Malcius competed at the 2018 IHSA Class 2A Boys’ Golf State Finals; senior Maggie Micetich participated at the 2018 IHSA Class AA Girls’ Golf State Finals; and seniors Grace Horky and Maggie O’Brien and freshman Amanda Lopykinski all advanced to the 2018 IHSA Class 1A Girls’ Tennis State Finals.
