Lemont’s Carmichael, Milan among three advancing to IDEA State Competition

Lemont's medalist in regional competition included (L-R) sophomore Matas Carmichael, senior Matt Milan and junior Billy Bozue.

Lemont High School’s Technology Student Association has advanced three students to the state’s top drafting contest. At the Illinois Design Educators Association (IDEA) Regional at Joliet Junior College on March 1, senior Matt Milan, junior Billy Bozue and sophomore Matas Carmichael each finished among the top in their respective categories. All will compete at the IDEA State Competition at Illinois State University on Saturday, April 27. At least one Lemont student has advanced to state competition in 11 of the last 12 years.

Milan became the latest Lemont student to triumph in the Architectural Board division in regional competition. In that category, students are challenged to design and/or draw specified views, details or sections using provided materials, specifications and drawings. A Lemont student has won the regional in Architectural Board six straight years, dating back to 2014.

Bozue earned a runner-up finish in Architectural Board, while Carmichael was second in Introductory CAD. Participants in this category are challenged to draw specified views of a given drawing problem.

Students representing a number of Joliet-area high schools competed in ten divisions at the IDEA Joliet Junior College Regional, one of many regional sites across the state. All first- and second-place finishers in individual competitions earn the right to compete at the IDEA State Competition, as do winners of team divisions. The divisions in which students compete are: Architectural Design, Engineering Design, Introductory Board, Introductory CAD, Architectural Board, 2D Architectural CAD, 2D Machine CAD, 3D Architectural CAD Modeling, 3D Assembly Modeling, and 3D CAD Modeling.

Lemont’s drafting program, under the tutelage of teacher Scott Duensing, has had a great deal of success in recent years at the IDEA Regional level. The school has boasted a number of regional champions, including Ryan Strauss ‘08 (3D Architectural CAD Modeling) in 2008; Nick Lawrence ‘09 (3D Architectural CAD Modeling) in 2009; Mark Kaminski ‘10 (Architectural Board) and Kathy Sitko ‘10 (Introductory Board) in 2010; Szymon Krzeptowski-Mucha ‘13 (Architectural Board) in 2012; Tom Janik ‘14 (Assembly Modeling) and Katie Lynch ‘14 (Architectural Board) in 2014; Jasmine Hornik ‘15 (Architectural Board) in 2015; Matt Lassak ‘16 (Architectural Board) in 2016; Jacob Wilk ‘18 (Architectural Board) in both 2017 and 2018; and the team of current senior Alex Fugiel, Aaron Bromberek ‘18 and Kendrick Tran ‘18 (Engineering Design) in 2018.

Lemont’s top individual finisher at the IDEA State Competition was Sean Armbruster ‘09, who was the runner-up in the 3D Architectural CAD Modeling category in 2009. Additionally, Fugiel, Bromberek and Tran earned a runner-up finish in Engineering Design in 2018. Lemont’s other state medalists have included Hornik (3rd, Architectural Board), Lassak (3rd, Architectural Board) and Adam Popper ‘17 (3rd, Introductory CAD) in 2015; Lassak (3rd, Architectural Board) and Dan Garczek ‘16 (3rd, 3D Architectural CAD Modeling) in 2016; and Wilk (3rd, Architectural Board) in 2018.

Lemont has earned multiple medals in state competition three times in four years; it captured three state medals in 2015 and two each in 2016 and 2018.
