Anna Mietus becomes third Lemont student to record three FBLA state titles

4/10/2019

Lemont's Anna Mietus is the first student in school history to earn four FBLA national berths, and the third to win three FBLA state titles.

Highlighted by a state championship from senior Anna Mietus, Lemont High School’s chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) placed among the top ten in 10 of 11 events in which its students entered at the 2019 Future Business Leaders of America State Leadership Conference, which was held in Springfield on April 5-6.

Competitors who finish among the top four in their respective categories earn the right to participate in the 2019 FBLA National Leadership Conference, which will be held in San Antonio this summer. A record 11 Lemont students have earned the chance to compete at the national level after combining for six top-four finishes.

Mietus took the top spot in Public Speaking, and became the first Lemont student to earn four FBLA National Leadership Conference berths. She previously won state titles in Intro to Business Presentation in 2017 and Broadcast Journalism in 2018, and was the state runner-up in Sales Presentation as a freshman in 2016.

Mietus joined Martynas Juskelis ‘18 and Alex Paulius ‘18 as the only Lemont students to win three FBLA state titles. Spenser Bailey ‘16, Danny Banas ‘11 and Krystian Paszek ‘11 each won two state titles.

Senior Kirsten Kash was the state runner-up in Broadcast Journalism. Seniors Andrew Deuschle, Nathan Pawlak and Lucas Zaczek placed third in Marketing; seniors Brett Abbott and Gavin Pawell were fourth in Business & Financial Systems; juniors Matthew Deuschle and Anish Sabnis placed fourth in Entrepreneurship; and juniors Ella Pelen and Briley Rakow were fourth in Publication Design.

Lemont’s other top-ten finishers included juniors Linas Juskelis, Jake Konieczka and Louka Ziogas (5th - Business Ethics); freshmen Jayne Pelen and Jackie Wencl (6th - Intro to Business Presentation); junior Abigail Belsan (7th - Sales Presentation); and junior Chris Vasvery and sophomore Sean Abbott (10th - Sports & Entertainment Management).

Lemont advanced to the FBLA State Leadership Conference after an outstanding performance - including 11 event wins and 15 top-two finishes - at the Central Northern Area Conference regional competition in January.

Lemont’s FBLA chapter has won at least one state title in eight of the last ten years, and has captured multiple titles six times (2010 - three; 2011 - five; 2015 - three; 2016 - five; 2017 - four; 2018 - four).

The FBLA is the largest business career student organization in the world. Illinois’ chapter of the FBLA may be found on the Web at www.ilfbla.org. Lemont’s FBLA chapter is sponsored by teacher John Aspel.
