Lemont advances two to IHSA Class 3A Girls’ Track and Field State Finals

5/14/2019

Lemont's Morgan Wrublik (left) and Kaylie Politza each stood out against some of the state's best competition at the IHSA Naperville North Sectional.

Lemont High School’s girls’ track and field program will be represented in state finals competition for the fourth time in six seasons. At the IHSA Naperville North Sectional on May 9, junior Morgan Wrublik posted a runner-up finish in the shot put, while freshman Kaylie Politza was fourth in the 800 meter run. Each will compete at the 2019 IHSA Class 3A Girls’ Track and Field State Finals, which will be contested on Friday, May 17, and Saturday, May 18, at O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Wrublik’s best effort in the shot put was 40’05.00”, which secured her second place in the event and ranked among the state’s top ten efforts in sectional competition. Wrublik also placed fourth in the discus throw with a school-record toss of 115’05” and was third in the long jump (16’09.75”).

Politza’s 800 meter run time of 2:14.22 not only was the fourth-fastest in her own sectional, but it was the fourth-fastest among all the state’s sectional competitors, as the top five state-qualifying times in the event came from the IHSA Naperville North Sectional. Her time easily eclipsed the state’s minimum qualifying time (2:19.11), established a school record in the event, and is reported to be the fastest ever by a Will County-area girls’ runner.

In track and field, the top two performers from each sectional earn a state finals berth, as do any other competitors who equal or surpass the qualifying mark in the preliminaries.

Both Wrublik and Politza have enjoyed fantastic seasons. At the South Suburban Conference-Blue Division meet earlier this month, Wrublik won the shot put (37’09.00”) and long jump (16’03.00”) and was the runner-up in the discus throw (99’08.00”). Politza was the SSC Blue champion in both the 800 (2:18.67) and 1600 (5:21.03) meter runs, and anchored the winning 4 x 800 meter relay (10:33.72) and runner-up 4 x 400 meter relay (4:17.15). Additionally, Politza earned all-state accolades last fall by placing 12th at the 2018 IHSA Class 2A Girls’ Cross Country State Finals in a school-record 3-mile time of 17:41.

Lemont’s best state finals performance in girls’ track and field came in 2014 when Vika Marmaite finished as the IHSA Class 3A runner-up in the triple jump. Wrublik and Politza each are the second in program history to reach the state finals in their respective events.

Lemont’s girls’ track and field program, which is coached by Tim Plotke, finished as the SSC Blue runner-up this spring.

Girls’ track and field is one of nine Lemont High School sports to be represented in IHSA State Finals competition this year. The cheerleading team advanced to the IHSA Medium Division Cheerleading State Finals; the girls’ cross country team placed 18th at the 2018 IHSA Class 2A Girls’ Cross Country State Finals; the wrestling team advanced to the 2019 IHSA Class 2A Wresting Dual Team State Finals; senior Karla Pulido participated at the 2019 IHSA Badminton State Finals; senior Kendra Anifer participated at the 2019 IHSA Girls’ Bowling State Finals; senior Andrew Deuschle participated at the 2018 IHSA Class 2A Boys’ Cross Country State Finals; freshman Paulius Malcius competed at the 2018 IHSA Class 2A Boys’ Golf State Finals; senior Maggie Micetich participated at the 2018 IHSA Class AA Girls’ Golf State Finals; seniors Grace Horky and Maggie O’Brien and freshman Amanda Lopykinski all advanced to the 2018 IHSA Class 1A Girls’ Tennis State Finals; and six wrestlers advanced to the 2019 IHSA Class 2A Wrestling Individual State Finals, including juniors Grant LaDuke (3rd, 145 pounds) and Kyle Schickel (2nd, 138 pounds), sophomore Apollo Gothard (2nd, 220 pounds) and freshman Evan Schiffman (4th, 106 pounds), who all medaled.
