Lemont’s David Lehenbauer nabs third IHSA Boys’ Track and Field State Finals berth

5/22/2019

Lemont's David Lehenbauer is only the second athlete in program history to record three IHSA Boys' Track and Field State Finals berths.

Lemont High School senior David Lehenbauer will be in familiar territory as he competes in the final weekend of the track and field season. Lehenbauer finished as the runner-up in the high jump at the IHSA Downers Grove North Sectional on May 17 to earn a berth to the 2019 IHSA Class 3A Boys’ Track and Field State Finals, which will be contested on Friday, May 24, and Saturday, May 25, at O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. Lehenbauer is just the second in program history to earn at least three trips to the state finals.

Lehenbauer cleared the 6’03.00” mark, which matched the top effort at the IHSA Downers Grove North Sectional.

The top two finishers in each of the state’s Class 3A Sectionals advance to the state finals, as do any athletes whose efforts in the preliminaries equal or surpass the designated qualifying marks.

Lehenbauer reached the final round in each of his first two state finals appearances in 2017 and 2018. As a junior in 2018, he cleared the 6’05.00” mark and placed 10th, just missing a medal.

He established a new school record in the high jump earlier this season when he cleared the 6’08.00” mark at the Lemont Indoor Invitational. He also won at the Class 3A Illinois Top Times event by clearing the 6’07.00” mark, and was the South Suburban Conference-Blue Division title winner after clearing the 6’06.00” mark.

Lemont’s boys’ track and field program, which is coached by Dennis Kennedy, has earned 16 state medals in its history. Nick Bromberek ‘00 won nine state medals in all, and is the only athlete in program history to reach the state finals four times. As the school’s only state finals competitor, Bromberek guided Lemont to a second-place finish at the 2000 IHSA Class AA State Finals. He won the 200- and 400-meter dash and long jump events, and was second in the 100-meter dash. Lemont’s most recent state medal came in 2016, when Chris Thompson ‘16 finished as the IHSA Class 3A State Runner-Up in the 400-meter dash.

Boys’ track and field is the 11th Lemont High School sport to be represented in IHSA State Finals competition this year. The cheerleading team advanced to the IHSA Medium Division Cheerleading State Finals; the girls’ cross country team placed 18th at the 2018 IHSA Class 2A Girls’ Cross Country State Finals; the wrestling team advanced to the 2019 IHSA Class 2A Wresting Dual Team State Finals; senior Karla Pulido participated at the 2019 IHSA Badminton State Finals; senior Kendra Anifer participated at the 2019 IHSA Girls’ Bowling State Finals; senior Andrew Deuschle participated at the 2018 IHSA Class 2A Boys’ Cross Country State Finals; freshman Paulius Malcius competed at the 2018 IHSA Class 2A Boys’ Golf State Finals; senior Maggie Micetich participated at the 2018 IHSA Class AA Girls’ Golf State Finals; seniors Grace Horky and Maggie O’Brien and freshman Amanda Lopykinski all advanced to the 2018 IHSA Class 1A Girls’ Tennis State Finals; junior Morgan Wrublik and freshman Kaylie Politza competed at the 2019 IHSA Class 3A Girls’ Track and Field State Finals, with Politza (9th, 800 meter run) medaling; and six wrestlers advanced to the 2019 IHSA Class 2A Wrestling Individual State Finals, including juniors Grant LaDuke (3rd, 145 pounds) and Kyle Schickel (2nd, 138 pounds), sophomore Apollo Gothard (2nd, 220 pounds) and freshman Evan Schiffman (4th, 106 pounds), who all medaled.
