Lemont’s Politza tabbed as all-state at 2019 IHSA Girls’ Track and Field State Finals

Lemont freshman Kaylie Politza earned all-state accolades in both cross country and track and field this year.

Lemont High School freshman Kaylie Politza capped an outstanding rookie campaign by earning her second all-state citation of the year. Politza placed ninth in the 800 meter run at the 2019 IHSA Class 3A Girls’ Track and Field State Finals, which were contested on May 17-18 at O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. Junior Morgan Wrublik also made her state finals debut, competing in the shot put.

Politza shined in the preliminary round, lowering her school record and Will County-area all-time best time to 2:13.48. That earned her third place in her flight and was the fourth-fastest time in the preliminaries. In the final round, Politza crossed the line ninth in 2:15.96 to earn a state medal and all-state honors.

Wrublik just missed advancing to the final day of competition. Her best throw in the shot put was 40’02.00”, which ranked third in her flight and 14th overall; the top 12 performers in the preliminary round advance to the final round.

Politza and Wrublik earned their state finals berths thanks to their efforts at the IHSA Naperville North Sectional on May 9. Wrublik posted a runner-up finish in the shot put (40’05.00”) while Politza was fourth in the 800 meter run (2:14.22). Politza’s time established a new school record, which she eclipsed in the preliminary round at the state finals. Wrublik also placed fourth in the discus throw with a school-record toss of 115’05” and was third in the long jump (16’09.75”).

In track and field, the top two performers from each sectional earn a state finals berth, as do any other competitors who equal or surpass the qualifying mark in the preliminaries.

Both Wrublik and Politza enjoyed fantastic seasons. At the South Suburban Conference-Blue Division meet, Wrublik won the shot put (37’09.00”) and long jump (16’03.00”) and was the runner-up in the discus throw (99’08.00”). Politza was the SSC Blue champion in both the 800 (2:18.67) and 1600 (5:21.03) meter runs, and anchored the winning 4 x 800 meter relay (10:33.72) and runner-up 4 x 400 meter relay (4:17.15). Additionally, Politza earned all-state accolades last fall by placing 12th at the 2018 IHSA Class 2A Girls’ Cross Country State Finals in a school-record 3-mile time of 17:41.

Politza joins a select group of Lemont girls’ track and field state medalists. The program’s best finish came in 2014 when Vika Marmaite finished as the IHSA Class 3A runner-up in the triple jump. Other state medalists have included Elissa Bitterman ‘12 (High Jump - 7th, Class 2A, 2010), Jacque Desmond ‘15 (Pole Vault - 6th, Class 3A, 2014), Nikole Hoster ‘98 (1600 meter run - 8th, Class AA, 1997) and Jessica Semenic ‘98 (100 meter hurdles - 8th, Class 2A, 1997).

Lemont’s girls’ track and field program, which is coached by Tim Plotke, finished as the SSC Blue runner-up this spring.
