After capturing the school’s first-ever IHSA team state championship in 2009, Lemont High School’s cheerleading squad has earned the chance to defend its title. The Indians won the Medium Division of the Belvidere Sectional on January 30 to earn their fifth straight trip to the IHSA Cheerleading State Finals, which will be held at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington, Ill., on Friday, February 5, and Saturday, February 6.

Lemont has posted top-three finishes at the IHSA Cheerleading State Finals four straight seasons, including runner-up placements in both 2007 and 2008 before capturing the Medium Division title last winter.

The preliminary rounds for both the Small and Medium Divisions will begin at 9:15 a.m. on Friday, with entries from the two divisions alternating. The finals for the Medium Division will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, with the awards ceremony scheduled to follow at 1:15 p.m.

Led by coach Brittany Glowa, the Indians qualified for the 2010 IHSA State Finals by posting a score of 93.47, which not only was easily good enough for the sectional title, but was also the highest score of any Medium Division qualifier from any of the state’s five sectionals. Lemont topped second-place Wauconda (84.90) by more than eight points. Crystal Lake Central (84.5), Rochelle (84.0) and Glenbard South (83.1) also advanced to the Medium Division State Finals from the Belvidere Sectional.

Lemont won its fourth consecutive South Suburban Conference (SSC) title on January 23. The SSC will send four squads to the IHSA State Finals, Oak Forest, Tinley Park and Richards all qualified in the Medium Division out of the Joliet Township Sectional.

Tickets for the IHSA State Finals will be available at the door, and are $10 for both children and adults (children in hand are free) each session. Tickets may also be purchased on-line at www.uscellularcoliseum.com, or by phone at (309) 434-2679; service fees may apply to Internet or phone orders.
