Lemont cheerleading wins second straight IHSA State Championship

2/6/2010

Lemont's cheerleading squad won its second consecutive IHSA Medium Division State Championship in 2010.

Lemont High School’s cheerleading squad captured its second IHSA state title in as many years on Saturday, February 6, when it finished first in the Medium Division at the 2010 IHSA Cheerleading State Finals at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington, Ill. The Indians edged second-place Riverside-Brookfield by nearly 1.50 points on the second and final day of competition.

Lemont’s state champion cheerleading squad will be honored at the school’s Winter Spirit Assembly on Thursday, February 11, at approximately 1:30 p.m. in the gymnasium.

Head coach Brittany Glowa’s squad put up a final-round score of 90.56, which was 1.48 points better than runner-up Riverside-Brookfield (89.08). South Suburban Conference (SSC) rival Oak Forest (88.86) was third, while Fox Lake Grant (88.48) and Highland (86.66) rounded out the top five teams in the Medium Division.

Lemont advanced to the championship round after leading all Medium Division competitors with a score of 91.32 on the first day of competition.

Lemont has now posted top-three finishes at the IHSA Cheerleading State Finals five consecutive seasons. The Indians collected runner-up placements in both 2007 and 2008 before winning the school’s first-ever IHSA team state championship in any sport in 2009.

Lemont’s 2010 varsity squad includes seniors Alyssa Baffoe, Sarah Clancy, Paige Rallis, Kelsey Wall, Katie Wallace and Crystal Wohead; juniors Annie Baffoe, Lindsay Bromberek, Jennifer Doornbos, Brittany Grad, Emily Marzo, Aileen McGraw and Keara McGraw; sophomores Sabrina Haggerty, Alex Lyewski and Nicole May; and freshmen Amber D’Andrea and Katelyn Howe.

The Indians qualified for the 2010 IHSA State Finals by winning the Medium Division at the IHSA Belvidere Sectional on January 30. Their qualifying score of 93.47 was not only good enough for the sectional title, but was also the highest score of any Medium Division qualifier from any of the state’s five sectionals.

Lemont won its fourth consecutive SSC title on January 23. The SSC sent four squads to the IHSA State Finals; besides Lemont and Oak Forest, Tinley Park and Richards also qualified for the Medium Division state finals.
