Lemont matches school record with three medalist finishes at WYSE State Finals

Lemont had three students post medalist finishes at the 2012 WYSE Academic Challenge, including (clockwise, from top left) senior Colin Konicki and juniors Justin Stanwyck and Lynn Stanwyck.

Returning to the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) Academic Challenge State Finals for the first time since 2009, Lemont High School’s WYSE squad enjoyed a successful showing in state competition. The team finished 12th of 21 teams in its division - its best placement ever - and its three medalists matched the most the school has had in one year. The 2012 WYSE State Finals were held on April 4 on the campus of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Junior Justin Stanwyck was Lemont’s top performer, placing fourth overall in the Engineering Graphics competition. That fourth-place finish matched the school’s previous best performance in the WYSE State Finals; Robert Erffmeyer ‘07 was fourth in Chemistry in 2006.

Junior Lynn Stanwyck was fifth in Chemistry, while senior Colin Konicki was sixth in Biology. The three combined medals from Konicki and the Stanwycks matched the three medals Lemont brought home from the 2006 WYSE State Finals, when Erffmeyer, Carla Penicka ‘06 (t-5th, Biology) and Katy Skowronski ‘06 (t-6th, Biology) all medaled.

Led by science teacher Tim Leffler, Lemont finished with a team score of 349.0 points in Division 1500 (enrollments of 701-1500 students), missing a top-ten finish by fewer than four points. The team’s 12th-place finish bettered the 2008 squad’s 14th-place finish. University of Chicago Lab School won the Division 1500 crown with a team score of 468.6.

In addition to Konicki and the Stanwycks, Lemont’s state finals contingent also included seniors Ashley Barajaz, Peter Cairo, Marjorie Dallmann, Jackson Montalbano and Morgan Rex; juniors Aaron Oldanie, Sarah Reaves and Joe Ruggiero; and sophomores Alexandra Albrecht and Jeff Mason.

Lemont advanced to the 2012 WYSE Academic Challenge State Finals after placing second in its division at the North Central College Sectional in March. The squad had three students place among the top three in their events at the sectional level: Justin Stanwyck was the sectional champion in Engineering Graphics, while Konicki and Rex placed second and third, respectively, in Biology.

Lemont also captured its regional competition at the University of St. Francis in February, posting a perfect team score of 500 and winning titles in six categories. Justin Stanwyck won in both Engineering Graphics and Physics; Konicki triumphed in Biology and English; Dallmann and Lynn Stanwyck tied for first in Mathematics; and Rex was victorious in Chemistry.

The Academic Challenge is a competitive series of tests created and administered by WYSE and offered to high school students in Illinois and Missouri at more than 50 community colleges and universities. Test material is drawn from senior high school and freshman level college curricula, and written by teams of college and university faculty. Subjects include Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering Graphics, English, Mathematics and Physics. Students compete as individuals and as part of a team.
