Lemont students qualify for IHSA Boys’ Tennis State Finals in singles, doubles flights
|Three Lemont High School students - including (clockwise, from top left) senior Jonathan Pacheco, freshman Nick Urban and junior Alex Vasic - will represent the school at the 2012 IHSA Boys' Tennis State Finals.
Lemont High School’s boys’ tennis program once again will be represented in state finals play, but this year, it will send entries in both singles and doubles competition, thanks to a pair of runner-up finishes at the IHSA Joliet West Sectional on May 19. Freshman Nick Urban
was second in the singles tournament, while senior Jonathan Pacheco
and junior Alex Vasic
teamed to finish second in doubles play. The trio will take part in the 2012 IHSA Boys’ Tennis State Finals, which will be contested from May 24-26 in Chicago’s northwest suburbs and hosted by High School Districts 211 and 214. Lemont has been represented at the IHSA Boys’ Tennis State Finals seven consecutive seasons.
Urban (30-2) qualified for the IHSA State Finals by reaching the sectional title match. After receiving a bye in the opening round, he won three consecutive matches in straight sets. In the title match, he pushed Joliet West’s Tom Carney to three games before ultimately coming up short (1-6, 6-4, 2-6).
Pacheco and Vasic (28-4) followed a similar path to their state finals berth. After a first-round bye, they captured three matches in straight sets. In the title match, they fell in two sets to Joliet West’s Collin Shea and Jack Carney (6-3, 6-2).
Pacheco will be appearing in state finals play for the second straight year. As a junior, he became the first player in school history to reach the second day of state finals competition, and finished among the top 32 players in the state.
All of Lemont’s state qualifiers will learn their first-round opponents later this week.
