Each year, I can’t wait for spring to arrive because schools buzz with activity as the year draws to a close. Within just a week’s time recently, Lemont High School featured its spring musical – “Guys and Dolls” – for three nights, honored the Class of 2014’s top performers at its annual Senior Honors Night, and armed nearly 340 graduates with diplomas as they prepare to tackle their futures. Lemont to be represented at 2012 IHSA Boys’, Girls’ Cross Country State Finals

10/29/2012

Lemont's cross country teams each will be represented at the IHSA Class 2A Cross Country State Finals. Individual qualifiers include (clockwise, from top left) senior Aaron Oldanie, sophomore Victoria Salazar and freshman Claire Gagen.

Lemont High School’s boys’ and girls’ cross country programs each will represent the school in state finals competition this year. Thanks to their performances at the IHSA Class 2A Wheaton Academy Sectional, sophomore Victoria Salazar and freshman Claire Gagen advanced to the girls’ state finals, while senior Aaron Oldanie qualified as an individual in the boys’ race. The trio will compete in the 2012 IHSA Class 2A State Finals, which will be contested on Saturday, November 3, at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

At the IHSA Wheaton Academy Sectional - which was contested at Reed-Keppler Park in West Chicago - Lemont finished seventh of 12 teams in the boys’ event, while the girls’ squad - which had qualified for team state finals competition five straight seasons - was sixth of 12 teams.

Both the boys’ and girls’ squads were close to earning team berths to the 2012 IHSA State Finals. The top five teams from each of four Class 2A sectionals from around the state, as well as the top seven finishers from schools that did not qualify for team competition, qualify for state finals competition in boys’ and girls’ cross country.

For the second straight season, Salazar paced the Indians in sectional competition. She crossed the finish line in the 3-mile race in 19:01, which was an improvement of nearly 30 seconds from her team-best time in last year’s sectional. She was 20th individually, while Gagen was 24th after finishing in 19:11. Oldanie covered the 3-mile course in the boys’ race in 16:24, finishing 30th individually.

Head coach Tim Plotke’s squads qualified for sectional competition after both finished among the top five teams at the IHSA Class 2A Wheaton Academy Regional, which also was contested at West Chicago’s Reed-Keppler Park. The boys’ squad was third in regional competition; Oldanie (16:33) and senior Scott Matulik (16:35) were ninth and 10th, respectively, in the boys’ race. The girls’ team was fifth, as Gagen (18:58) was the team’s top finisher in ninth place.

Lemont swept the South Suburban Conference-Blue Division cross country titles this fall. The boys’ squad won its first-ever SSC Blue title, while Gagen posted a medalist finish as the girls’ team also captured the team title.

The IHSA will host both boys’ and girls’ state finals competition at Detweiller Park on November 3 in Class A, Class 2A and Class 3A. The girls’ Class 2A race begins at 11 a.m., the boys’ Class 2A race follows at noon, and the Class 2A awards ceremony is slated for 1 p.m. There is no per-person admission to the event, but the IHSA encourages fans to carpool. Fans may park at Detweiller Park, with each vehicle being charged $10 and each van being charged $15.

Boys’ and girls’ cross country are the second and third Lemont High School sports to be represented in IHSA State Finals competition this year. Junior Bridget Lynn competed at the Class AA Girls’ Golf State Finals.
