Lemont High School set for “Letters to Sala,” GALLERY 306 show from Feb. 1-2

Lemont High School’s Performing Arts Center stage will feature a stirring drama of how a Holocaust survivor and her family grapple with that history. The Drama Club’s winter play – “Letters to Sala” – will be featured on Friday, February 1, and Saturday, February 2; the Thursday performance was cancelled due to inclement weather. In conjunction with the winter play, the school’s Art Department will be featuring its “Show Globe” art exhibition in “GALLERY 306.”

The production of “Letters to Sala” is set to run in the school’s Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. nightly. Tickets may be purchased at the door, and are $10 for adults and $7 for children, senior citizens and students with a valid school ID. Students, faculty and staff also may purchase tickets during lunch periods beginning Monday, January 28.

The exhibit in “GALLERY 306” is a student art show that will be judged by alumna Brooke Twohill ‘08. The exhibit will be open from 5:45-6:45 p.m. nightly prior to the performances of “Letters to Sala,” spotlighting a variety of outstanding work from Lemont High School students.

Adapted from the book “Sala’s Gift” by Ann Kirschner and based on a true account, playwright Arlene Hutton’s “Letters to Sala” chronicles a young girl’s survival during wartime Germany, spanning five years and seven Nazi labor camps. Sala Garncarz Kirschner kept her cache of 350 letters secret for more than 50 years, concealing her incredibly painful history in the process. Everything changes when she reveals the letters to her daughter, Ann. “Letters to Sala” draws from the emotional journeys that begin for both Ann and Sala when the letters resurface.

“Letters to Sala” will be performed under the direction of Paula Smith, with Leslie Kane serving as the assistant director.

Those planning to attend any performance of “Letters to Sala” may park in the school’s parking garage or in the lot outside the Performing Arts Center; both are accessible off of Julia Street.
