Lemont High School senior Martin Kaminski has been cited as an honorable mention selection to the 2023-24 IHSA All-State Academic Team. Hundreds of student-athletes from across the state were nominated for consideration by their schools. Kaminski is just the sixth Lemont student-athlete to be named to either the all-state team or as an honorable mention selection.
The IHSA’s 2023-24 All-State Academic Team includes 26 student-athletes - 13 male and 13 female - who embody what it means to take advantage of the entire high school experience. In addition to those 26 honored students, 50 more are cited as honorable mention picks. The All-State Academic Team was honored at a banquet in Bloomington on April 8.
Kaminski has been active in both athletics and extracurricular activities during his prep career, and has done so while excelling academically. A high honor roll student who has maintained a grade point average of better than 4.10, he has challenged himself in the classroom with a series of honors classes and four Advanced Placement courses. Kaminski earned AP Scholar accolades, thanks to his performance on AP exams through his junior year.
Kaminski was part of both the football and boys’ track and field programs for four seasons, and is a South Suburban Conference All-Academic honoree. He was a member of SSC Blue champion football teams as both a junior and senior. Kaminski contributed to Junior Achievement for two years and earned induction to both the National Honor Society and Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society. Kaminski has served as President of the National Honor Society as a senior, and spearheaded efforts for the organization’s “Lemont v. Hunger” event that led to more than 100,000 meals being packed on May 11 to benefit the West Suburban Food Pantry.
Kaminski plans to attend Indiana University.
Every IHSA member school is invited to nominate one female student and one male student for consideration for the All-State Academic Team. Nominees must possess a minimum 3.50 cumulative grade point average; have participated in at least two IHSA sponsored sports or activities as juniors and seniors; and have demonstrated outstanding citizenship.
Nominations are evaluated by a committee comprised of IHSA principals, representatives of the Illinois Activities Directors Association and representatives of the Illinois Athletic Directors Association. One male winner and one female winner from each of the seven IHSA Board of Directors Divisions are selected initially, while the final 12 spots on the All-State Academic Team are filled by at-large candidates from anywhere in the state.
Lemont’s IHSA All-State Academic Team recipients have included Denise Soehrman ‘05 (basketball/golf) in 2005 and Taylor Campos ‘16 (cross country/track and field) in 2016. Natalie Palarz ‘19 (2019; cross country/track and field), Matt Solarski ‘01 (2001; cross country/track and field) and Amber Trick ‘12 (2012; cross country/soccer) were cited as honorable mention selections.
