Lemont’s Megan Hunt qualifies for IHSA Girls’ Track and Field State Finals

Lemont High School senior Megan Hunt will compete at the 2021 IHSA Class 3A Girls’ Track and Field State Finals, which will be contested on Saturday, June 12, at Eastern Illinois University. Hunt will make her state finals debut after setting a school record in the long jump at the IHSA Lockport Sectional on June 3.

In her first attempt at the sectional, Hunt recorded a jump of 17’11.25”, establishing a new school record. That effort was good for third place at one of the state’s most competitive sectionals, and eclipsed the state’s qualifying mark of 17’07.00”. Hunt was busy at the sectional, as she also placed among the top ten in both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles and competed as part of 4x400 meter relay.

Hunt has enjoyed a terrific final season, which included four top-two finishes at the South Suburban Conference-Blue Division Meet last month. She won the pole vault, and placed second in the long jump, 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, to help coach Tim Plotke’s team to a fourth-place finish.

Hunt joins Vika Marmaite, who reached the state finals in 2014, as the program’s only state qualifiers in the long jump. In track and field, the top two performers from each sectional earn a state finals berth, as do any other competitors who equal or surpass the qualifying mark in the preliminaries.

Lemont’s best state finals finish in girls’ track and field came in 2014 when Marmaite finished as the IHSA Class 3A runner-up in the triple jump. Other state medalists have included Elissa Bitterman ‘12 (High Jump - 7th, Class 2A, 2010), Jacque Desmond ‘15 (Pole Vault - 6th, Class 3A, 2014), Nikole Hoster ‘98 (1600 meter run - 8th, Class AA, 1997), Kaylie Politza (800 meter run - 9th, Class 3A, 2019) and Jessica Semenic ‘98 (100 meter hurdles - 8th, Class 2A, 1997).
