Lemont High School to feature “The Legend of Sammy’s Swamp,” Gallery 306 show

A group of teenagers join their teacher for what turns out to be a haunted field trip, and end up solving the mystery of the swamp monster. The Lemont High School Drama Club’s fall play – “The Legend of Sammy’s Swamp” – will be featured in the school’s Performing Arts Center from Thursday, October 31, through Saturday, November 2. In conjunction with the fall play, the school’s Art Department will host its “Illuminated” art exhibition in Gallery 306.

The production of “The Legend of Sammy’s Swamp” is set to run in the school’s Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. nightly. Tickets may be purchased at the door, and are $10 for adults and $7 for children, senior citizens and students with a valid school ID. Students, faculty and staff also may purchase tickets during lunch periods beginning Monday, October 28.

The exhibit in Gallery 306 is a student art show with a fitting title, as it will be its first since the gallery added track lighting through a grant from the Lemont High School Educational Foundation. “Illuminated” will be open from 5:45-6:45 p.m. nightly prior to the performances of “The Legend of Sammy’s Swamp,” spotlighting a variety of outstanding work from Lemont High School students.

The cast of characters in “The Legend of Sammy’s Swamp” includes, among others, an eccentric teacher and her troupe of bickering high school science students as they show up for a weekend stay at Sammy’s Swamp. Formerly known as the beautiful Lake Shimmer Resort, Sammy’s Swamp has deteriorated over a span of 30 years while plagued by a host of mysteries – none greater than the curious case of the swamp ghost. A series of flashback sequences features a variety of zany characters, revealing how greed, betrayal and murder brought the downfall of the Lake Shimmer Resort.

“The Legend of Sammy’s Swamp” will be performed under the direction of Paula Smith and Leslie Kane.

Those planning to attend any performance of “The Legend of Sammy’s Swamp” may park in the school’s parking garage or in the lot outside the Performing Arts Center; both are accessible off of Julia Street. Lemont could potentially host an IHSA football playoff game on either November 1 or November 2. If that were to occur, patrons for that evening’s production of “The Legend of Sammy’s Swamp” would be encouraged to arrive early and allow for extra time to park.
