Statement concerning threats related to social media misinformation

STATEMENT FROM PRESIDENT KURT KORTE ON BEHALF OF THE LEMONT HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT 210 BOARD OF EDUCATION

Last week, some members of the Board of Education and administration received death threats. Based on the substance of the threats received, it is clear they are a direct result of misinformation about a particular aspect of a health education unit. This misinformation was widely shared via multiple social media channels.

We are unable to share details of the threats due to an ongoing investigation.

We recognize some parents or members of the community may have questions or concerns about instructional content. Rather than immediately posting on social media, we appeal to anyone with concerns about instructional content to contact the school directly. Send an email, or even better, pick up the phone and have a conversation with the classroom teacher, the department chair, the director of curriculum, the principal, or the superintendent.

When a concern is brought forward, that particular instructional content or supplemental resource material will be reviewed. In the past, resolution has been reached in various ways, such as discontinued use of the specific content, continued use of the content with modifications, or alternative content.

Thank you for your support of Lemont High School.
