October 2011 Students of the Month

Karina Folliard
Freshman
Family & Consumer Science
Karina Folliard was cited as the Freshman Student of the Month by the Family & Consumer Science Department. Described as a “breath of fresh air” by her instructors, Karina has demonstrated an eagerness to learn and brings a positive attitude to class each day. She lists Accelerated Algebra II Honors, Family & Consumer Science Survey, English I Honors and Spanish I as her favorite classes. Karina already is heavily involved in the school’s Interact club, which allows her to volunteer often. She plans on becoming part of the school’s girls’ basketball and softball programs, and also is a member of the Foreign Language Club. She hopes to earn straight A’s throughout her high school career, attend college and get a good job. In her free time, Karina enjoys making crafts, baking, exercising, and hanging out with friends.

Ingrid Lejins
Sophomore
Foreign Language
The Foreign Language Department selected Ingrid Lejins as the Sophomore Student of the Month. A high honor roll student, Ingrid has varied academic interests. She lists Theater Technology II, English II Honors and German II among her favorite classes, and creative writing, history and sociology among her other interests. Her teachers note that she is a diligent student who always is prepared and contributes flawless work. Additionally, she treats others kindly and fairly. Ingrid is involved in a number of activities, including Drama Club, Foreign Language Club, and the girls’ bowling program. After graduation, she plans to attend college and study theatre and literature. In her free time, Ingrid enjoys writing stories and poems.

Billy Hayes
Junior
Art
Billy Hayes was tabbed as the Junior Student of the Month by the Art Department. An honor roll student, Billy is described by his teachers as a “renaissance man” because of his interests in the arts and athletics. He lists Drawing & Design III as his favorite course, and is one of the hardest working students in the Art Department. His talent, creativity and dedication are evident in his work, and he dedicates much of his free time to creating his own art outside of his classroom projects. Billy’s positive attitude allows him to accept challenges and criticism of his art, and he always is willing to assist peers with their projects. A member of the school’s baseball program, he hopes to play baseball in college, and intends on pursuing a career in the art field. In his spare time, he enjoys sketching.

Joe O'Brien
Senior
Physical Education
The Physical Education Department picked Joe O’Brien as the Senior Student of the Month. An honor roll performer, Joe lists World History, U.S. History, Business Law and the Physical Education Leadership Program as his favorite classes. He has been a member of the varsity boys’ basketball team since his sophomore year, and also has been involved in the Foreign Language Club and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). Joe’s nominating teacher lauds his work in the P.E. Leadership Program. He has established a terrific working relationship with a freshman student who requires one-on-one attention, and his compassion has made him a positive role model for other students. Joe would like to attend Illinois State University, and intends on pursuing a career in special education. Outside of school, he is a member of a travel basketball program and holds an internship with the Bulls-Sox Training Academy.
