The Science Department named Claire Podrebarac as the Freshman Student of the Month. Claire lists Integrated Math II Honors and Biology Honors as her favorite courses. Her teacher notes she already has excelled in the honors science curriculum, showing success both academically and personally while developing a strong interest in the subject. Claire leads by example during labs and assignments, and asks thought provoking questions. She has designs on competing for both the girls’ basketball and softball programs, and also plays travel softball. Claire plans on attending medical school in the future, with an ultimate goal of becoming a pediatrician. In her free time, she enjoys reading and spending time with her family.

Alex Brown

Business

Alex Brown was cited as the Sophomore Student of the Month by the Business Department. A high honor roll performer, Alex most enjoys mathematics and chemistry. He has been a member of the school’s baseball and boys’ golf programs, and twice has placed among the top three in the conference golf tournament. Alex already has been part of six business classes in just three semesters, and has proven to be a strong leader in each class. He is among the first students to volunteer answers and participates daily. His teachers count on him to lend a hand to peers who need assistance. Alex plans to attend college and secure a position to provide for his future family. He serves as a law clerk at the Strama Brown Law Firm, and likes playing golf and spending time with friends.

Mirella Miazga

Mathematics

The Mathematics Department tabbed Mirella Miazga as the Junior Student of the Month. Mirella is a high honor roll student who most enjoys AP Calculus BC, AP Physics I, and Advanced CAD II Honors. A recent National Honor Society inductee, she was a state runner-up at last spring’s Illinois Design Educators Association state finals, and participated in the Mathletes state finals as well. Her instructors describe her as incredibly smart and clever, but someone who embodies kindness. Mirella both gives and takes advice on tackling problems, and her sunny disposition brightens the school community. She plans on studying mechanical engineering, and says designing roller coasters would be a dream job. Mirella works part-time, is a competitive dancer, and likes playing with her dog and hanging out with family and friends.

Owen Zogby

Music

Owen Zogby was selected as the Senior Student of the Month by the Music Department. A high honor roll student, Owen’s favorite classes include Local History and Graphic Design. His teachers describe him as a standout musician who demonstrates a desire to make the group better by helping his peers, as well as a student who leads by example. Owen’s practice habits and positive attitude are contagious. A member of the school’s Concert Band, Marching Band, Jazz Band, and Honors Symphonic Band, he was the high brass section leader in the Marching Band this fall. Owen also recently was named as an all-district musician and has earned his Eagle Scout designation. He plans on studying architecture in college. Owen serves as a park district swim instructor.
