Earned 10 varsity letters, tallying four each in football and baseball and two in basketball... was tabbed as the “Best Athlete” of the Class of 1949... served as a football co-captain as a junior in 1947, and captained the squad in 1948, during which he played for Lemont High School Athletic Hall of Fame honoree William Ryan... played first base and centerfield - and was also the school’s first-ever lefthanded catcher - during his four-year baseball career... played varsity basketball his last two years (1947-49)... member of the Varsity Club and the Athletic Board of Control... earned a football scholarship to Washburn (Kan.) University, where he earned varsity letters in 1950 and 1951... won the 1952 Kansas “Golden Gloves” award in the middleweight division... was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps upon graduating from Washburn in 1953, and remained in the Marines (regular and reserve) for 39 years, retiring as a Colonel... was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Vietnamese Medal of Valor and two Purple Hearts... served as a teacher, administrator and Superintendent of Schools in the Santa Ana (Calif.) Unified School District.
